In a world of my own
I've just got hold of an inexpensive 4790 to replace my old i5 processor and I'm curious about operating temperatures. Stock Cooler.

Sitting at 44C while idle (well, typing this message....) and hitting 75C while playing Pokerstars VR.

My GPU is a GTX 970, I have a Super Flower 450w PSU.

I'm seeing some stuttering in VR on lowest settings, but that may be entirely down to the 970 not being up to scratch anymore. I'm just trying to determine if my issues are CPU or GPU related - ie: is the CPU getting too hot, or bottlenecking the GPU or perhaps having power issues from the PSU.

Any advice gratefully received.

To be fair, the stock cooler provided by Intel is basic, very basic. Unless airflow is optimum, the temperatures will be poor.
But don't need to overkill with a massive cooler, like the Dark Rock Pro 4 or similar. Plenty of very capable coolers around at a good price.
I would check and monitor during various tests if the CPU stays at 100% usage or the GPU. Also the clocks. If thermal throttle is happening, the clock will be cut to protect the chip.

Idle temp of 44 does sound a bit high compared to my old 4790K rig, but I was on an aftermarket AIO cooler and idle was the low 30's. Was the stock cooler used or not ? Could just be the fins full of junk or even a poor spread of thermal compound. What are your temps like if you leave the sides off the case ?

EDIT: I just checked temps on the unix box I'm using that 4790K in now and idle temps are all low 30's:

[peter@centosmaster ~]$ sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0: +33.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +31.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +29.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +30.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +31.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

This is with the stock Intel cooler (I binned the AIO). Case is a cheapy Bitfenix one, fairly spacious and good airflow.

Yeah I'm using the stock cooler - and it's not the K model chip, just the basic 4790. Sitting here typing this the temps across cores are all at 44-46C. I'm guessing a better cooler is the next step - any recommendations for something that will do the job without being overkill?

Cheers!

Your cpu is rated to run at much higher temps and all are safe based on what you posted.

If you are getting some stuttering it'll be down to your GTX 970 but to check use msi afterburner osd for utilisation %
