My daughters core 2 system is on the way out so I am thinking of giving her my i5 750 and upgrading

I'm looking at getting a 4790K (not that I need it) with the following possibly;

Asus Z97-K Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB)

Any suggestions on a better combination of motherboard and Ram are welcome.

However, my main question is, is there any other i7 (or equivalent) I should consider in the price range. Performance and cores are only for the future really but I would like the option of a good overclock should I get bored. At stock I do want something quiet.

Cheers

How about the i5 if you don't need the i7?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £191.99
1 x MSI Z97 Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £95.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £49.99
Total : £347.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you wanted to get an i7, I think now would be the time to get a 4790k. It's become apparent the current batches are high clockers with low voltages:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £275.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £49.99
Total : £445.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I have considered the i5 but for an extra £100 I would rather just have the extra threads and speed. As you say it makes sense but there is little logic to this upgrade. I guess to be clear I am looking for fun alternatives. Maybe is there was an i5 I could clock to 5 Gig I may go for it. As I understand it the i7 above normally tops out at 4.7 on air.

how about spending extra 100 and treating yourself for the best?

I did look at the Socket 2011 boards but wasn't such what I was gaining for the extra motherboard cost? Need to do some reading I guess. I did note the quad-channel

I assume (on a cost basis) this would be the equivalent CPU

Intel 4820K 3.70GHz (Ivybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor

Edit: Didn't see the drop down box in the link.

I had the core I5 4570K for about 18 months and was very happy with it, also paired with the Kingston Hyper X memory. I have just upgraded to the I7- 4790K, keeping the same memory. It certainly hits higher marks in the benchmarks, but I don't think you will notice the difference gaming and definitely not in "normal" PC use.

If you want to go the whole hog and can afford it, that X99 bundle is the way to go when it comes to "future-proofing" your rig. Should last you ages, really. Bear in mind though that unless a given application can make use of all the extra cores, a 5820k will be no faster than a 4790k.

At the moment I am going to stick with the i7, but am once again considering the i5 and moving some money over to better fans and SSD etc. I will likely change my mind over and over again until I order tomorrow.

Looking at these fans - 6 x Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM

Any suggestions on a good 1150 motherboard that leaves plenty of room between the memory and the heatsink?

Looking at the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev C CPU Cooler with two of the above fans

As I understand it I will need lowprofile RAM for that cooler on some boards.

I currently have a H50 (I think, it is about 5 years old now) and I never found it that quiet. Admittedly it could do with some better fans and it is cooling 1 GHz of overclock on my i5 750, but this has put me off going for it agian.

I'd recommend it though. The 'i' versions are far better giving you total control over the fans. Creating a custom fan curve would solve that - and has for my H100i!
