Hey,

Been looking at getting a new CPU as mine is getting a little out dated, i know it is a good chip and been more than happy with it but wondering if it is worth getting something like the i7 9700k which i can get for a decent price now? only downside is i need to get a bundle with MB and Ram.

But the 4790K has been a great chip and if its not worth the money then fair enough :-)

Just look to see what you think?

Hi Baden

With a 1080Ti and a 144Hz monitor you will indeed see substantial benefit in upgrading your CPU from 4790K.

The 9700K would be a great choice as a replacement as it's high clock speed and likelyhood of being able to overclock all cores to 4.8-5 ghz means you'll be getting substantial gains in framerate.

With regards to Motherboard this generation seems to have Gigabyte out on top in terms of VRM / price-performance so i'd go for Gigabyte Z390 UD / Auros Elite/Ulta/Master based on your budget and feature requirements.

I hope that helps!

You should also price up a 3600 system if your having to go down the route of a new board + ram anyway.

Sorry Glanza but I have to disagree - Baden has a 1080Ti and a 144hz monitor, I don't think that a 3600 is good advice considering a stock 9600k which is less than 200 pounds new has substantially higher framerates than 3600 given his system configuration and he's already mentioned he has the budget for a 9700k.

Assuming that you know something about Badens financial situation that I don't then the 3600 could be a good choice if he is on a very limited budget, but the upgrade path is not great at the moment as the 9600k beats every AMD chip apart from the 3950x at the moment in most games given this monitor + GPU and the 9700k wins hands down every time.

I agree with Jamie on this one, i appreciate your input Glanza but AMD i'm not that keen on and in regards to budget (i should have stated) is around £600ish for the whole lot so should be fine for the 9700K

I only really use my machine for gaming so didn't see the point in the 9900k as the gaming performance compared to the 9700k isn't much but the price is.

So jumping from 4790k to the 9700k would be a worth while improvement?

At 1440p with a 1080 Ti there won't be any difference between a 9700k and a 3600 as they will both be bottlenecked by the gpu.

The same as the other two threads on same topic about same CPU, I would wait and see whats new from AMD and Intel if you are not struggling in games now.

4.4GHZ is not much for a 4790k (better silicon than the 4770k) try for at least 4.6GHZ if you want a gain in gaming esp at 1080p and even 1440p, you would need be at 4k to remove nearly all the bottleneck (see recent review for your CPU).

I have a 4790k @ 5GHZ and had a 1080Ti FE but fan bearing acted up so now have Titan Xp (Both GPU's can do 2100MHZ Core but Titan Xp can do 13GHZ Memory (1080Ti was 12GHZ)

So you reckon i should overclock the CPU instead? Don't really want to wait for next gen as the prices are normally stupid high and i'm not really wanting to go over the £600 mark. Plus i feel you can get stuck in that " wait for next gen" rut for ages and end up not getting where.

Again are you struggling, if yes does a OC help if not then upgrade but its near time for new tech (I added links to my posts).

I used to buy the next new thing every time but in 2013 I stopped as it was dumb and TBH I do not game as much as I used to due to cannot be bothered and games are just not the same today (not many of them anyhow).

This will be the longest I have kept any CPU/Mobo/Ram but it is still doing fine at 1440p.

Just my 2 cents since I also have a 4790K and been thinking about upgrading.
The first thing you should do is trying to overclock 200-400Mhz more to your CPU.

I've been playing with a 4790K 4.6 - 4.8 ( i have both profiles ) with a 1080Ti and the only thing that is really stopping me from upgrading is because this chip still has some more to give.

I play at 1440p.

As for the upgrade ...
I'm not an Intel nor AMD biased person ... at all ( if I was, then it should be towards Intel since I only used Intel ) ... but right now, if you REALLY want to upgrade, I think the most logical upgrade path is clear... AM4.

Why? Because you can get some good Mobo and Ram now, with a lower end 3600/3600X for now... and you know that, in 1 year, you can keep this config and upgrade towards a more powerful CPU with Ryzen's 4000.

With Intel, not really since z390 is "dead" and the 1200 socket is going to be replaced in the spring and... will be dead on arrival ( almost ).

Although PCI-E Gen 4 is not a thing for now ... in 2 years, you'll be on the right side of the river when this kicks off.

So ... there's actually no upgrade path going with the 9th gen right now ... even the 10th gen ...

So, if it was me ( and I have everything on my shopping cart, I only didn't click buy yet ) ... I would go AM4 route (and I think i will).

... But again ... I still didn't click the BUY button myself :) And that's because Oc'ed 4790K is so damn good ...

( sorry for my English ... Portuguese guy here so ... some grammar mistakes may happen )

It's a poor time to upgrade to an Intel CPU with new ones coming out in a few months, and the new ones will all have hyperthreading so will atleast offer better value.

My advice would be to either make a ryzen system or wait a few months for new Intel parts.

I just went from the 4790k which was still great to the 3800x which is better but mainly for the upgrade platform on Am4 which can be a 3900x or a 3950x or wait for the 4000 series so the Am4 platform has potentialy up to 10 years in it and also pcie4

Good luck with whatever you choose
