I7 5820k vs 6700k

How are you finding that board? I have heard horror stories about the bios etc. Did it require you to setup anything to get it to run right?

And I agree with the gpu thing. Time to rethink this lol At least I know now I want to go x99 so that makes it a bit easier

Be careful with the asus have just been reading a load of horror stories on overclock.net about the ones with the overclock socket killing chips and if you have the oc socket activated it voids the intel warranty.

I heard a lot of problems but I have had none whatsoever. M.2 worked fine out of the bag, boots into Windows in around 10 seconds, I have stuff plugged into USB 3.0 without issues... So maybe I was lucky :p

You have to consider Asus are very popular so naturally you are going to hear more complaints about their products.

Find a board with features you need and/or want, read a couple of reviews, go from there :)

Thanks to everyone.

I have a good basis moving forward. I have always used Asus boards - I have the ROG asus board for amd at the moment and its amazing so the x99 pro was my first choice but I will consider each option and go from there.

Cheers :)

Been having this debate with myself for the last couple weeks... Can't seem to work out which platform would be a better choice. I think deep down I know the 5820k/x99 are a better buy overall, but something keeps luring my mind back to the z170...

i know what you mean, was in the same position, i opted for skylake as it was newer platform and uses less power , i only game, and most likely change again in 1-2years , i get bored :p

I'm looking myself to put something together that will last a little longer I think, and that's something of a worry with the 1151 socket tbh.

The original plan was to grab a 6700k and use a placeholder gpu until pascal/greenland arrived, but now I'm worried that I'll be getting a quad core just at the cusp of when games will start to actually utilise more cores. If skylake-e comes about with some nice extra cores/clock speed but a different socket, I'm replacing everything all over again.

What gives me pause over the 5820k is the older/larger arch, slower clocks and hotter temps/higher power draw. Of course you do get those two wonderful extra cores and 4 threads. (Extra pci lanes aren't much of a draw for me, as I pretty much never add more than 2 gpu's to a rig)

With nothing really even on the horizon for around the time of the new gen of gpu's, I'm really not sure what build to go with at all. Like above, it seems the smart money would be spent on an x99/5820k, but something about the z170 just pulls me back ;)

Alright, here's my journey with x99:

Set it all up, with asus X-99S. Had some USB issues where it killed my keyboard on boot and wouldn't work again until I restarted. Sent back.

Got MSI Krait Edition - USB issues again. This time worse, keyboard and mouse would interfere if they were on the USB 3.0 ports (2.0 was not an option, that's reserved for my USB DAC). Sent it back.

Decided to try Asus X-99S again. So far, working beautifully and I can finally get to overclocking!

So all in all, there was some annoying issues but when you're finally up and running it is all worth it. :) I'd use the rainforest to grab your mobo's in case you need to RMA them so you can get replacements without being left without a board.

Thanks for that. After my last post I haven't looked at anything else. Still got to the 15th October till I get paid to decide exactly what I want to get.

Either way - it will be better than what I have but I want to make sure I pick the right thing for future proofing and I think x99 ticks those boxes over all areas.

Also - what is this OC socket on the Asus board? Can you turn it off but still overclock? I am a bit confused about it but would rather know anyway. I don't plan to overclock it for a long time lol

The only thing I will be doing in the bios is setting fan profiles and ensuring RAM is running at correct speed

I am running an Asus X99-S (with a 520K @4.2) after some teething problems.

The problems were it appears all to do with the rear usb connectors - first board was rubbish so rma ; bought a msi gaming (5?) which was stable and used until a new Asus was issued BUT I then managed to bend a good few pins on the 'new' Asus so ended up buying a further new Asus - which is installed and running as I hoped it would (Would mention that usb 3 at rear can still be a bit difficult at times - once you can get a settled , happy, set up then it does seem to be stable thereafter :) )

Am running 2 x 290 and a Samsung 512gb 921 M2 drive - everything as speedy as one would hope.

Not sure if the Asus use of extra pins does actually improve overclocking etc or if it's mostly marketing speak but overclocking was very easy :D (am running 1.09v on the cpu )
