i7 6850k Multiplier issue

Hi all,

I've had an i7 6850k with an Asus Rampage V Extreme (X99) since the processor was first released. All that time I've had it on XMP2 (2800mhz DDR4 ram speeds) with the CPU OCed to 4000mhz (BCLK 100x40) and it has been solid/stable throughout.

Recently, I've noticed that the CPU runs at 3800mhz because the multiplier drops down to 38. No matter what I do in the BIOS, it starts off 4000mhz then drops down as soon as windows 10 loads.

I have changed nothing at all before this started, windows power management remains at high power (with 100% cpu power always). It literally started out of the blue. No new software other than whatever windows 10 update chucks at me. I've not touched a single BIOS setting since initially overclocking it.

CPU-Z has changed also, instead of reporting the multiplier to be x40, it now reports x38 (12 - 38). This clock range is new, I've never had it before and I suspect something is causing it but can't identify what.

Any ideas please? It's not really affecting performance for what I do (games and some Lightroom now and then) but it's really annoying me.

Thanks.

EDIT: forgot to mention that for some reason, CPU-Z also shows Core 5 to be x40, the rest times x38. I've tried disabling Turbo Boost, makes no difference. It's been enabled all this time anyway.

OK thanks, I've dumped the whole bios settings below, sorry it's everything didn't want to miss anything out.

I should say again that these settings have worked for ages, nothing has changed in them.

Also, I discovered a weird thing today: if I stress the CPU (p95 blend), it underclocks straight down to 1.2ghz (12x100) and stays that way until the stress stops. I'm certain some random windows thing is doing this, I just can't think what. Could it be the Spectre updates recently??

How are temperatures? P95 uses AVX and your AVX Instruction Core Ratio Negative Offset seems to be super high. From what I understand that's trying to reduce your core frequency by 3100Mhz under AVX load which is absurd. I'd recommend a much lower value, say 5.

I would go a few steps further :-

DRAM SVID Support [Disable]
CPU SVID Support [Disable]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Disable]
CPU Input Voltage [1.8]
CPU Load-line Calibration [Level 5]
AVX Instruction Core Ratio Negative Offset [0]

At 4ghz you don't need any avx offset , if its getting too hot under avx workloads your cooling solution is poor, also keep an eye on your SA voltage , Asus boards can massively overvolt this which can damage the chip longterm, keep it between 0.8 and 1.1v.

I would also set the cpu voltage manually , i would run with adaptive and set and 'Additional turbo mode cpu core voltage' of 1.2v and try to work down from there.

Hi so I did the above changes, AVX can’t be set to 0, so set it at minimum (1)

What this did solve is the prime95 issue, so cpu didn’t throttle under stress. Temperatures are fine (it’s cooled with a Corsair H100i)

However sadly the main issue remains. Bios is set to 40x100; which initially the cpu starts off as, the when windows loads it reverts back to 12-38 multiplier range :(

sounds like a software issue within windows or a power plan setting , do you have any asus software installed ? and try avx negative offset- Auto , i'm pretty sure that means disabled.

Set the power plan to High performance and make sure the power plan's maximum cpu state is at 100%

You see this is what confuses me, I've installed/changed nothing and power plan is at 100% cpu as it's always been.
Played around with XTU today, it can set the clocks back again but I have to manually do it after any reboot....

I think I'm going to do a fresh W10 install and see what happens.

before you do that pull the bios battery and unplug the kettle lead , hold the power button in and reset that bios, could be a bios bug , i've had similar issues on x99 in the past.

Reinstalled windows and installed everything I had installed before. Other than CPU-Z, nothing installed to do with cpu or overclocking.

Seems to have fixed it.

I have no idea what/why this all happened.
I’ve pushed it to 4.2 now thanks to your bios settings above :)

Sorry just saw this. I’d already done that when it first started and it didn’t help :(

Fantastic, now see how far you can push that multiplier :D
