Afternoon all,

I'm looking to put together a new build as I'm currently running an old i5 2500k.

This is what I've come up with and I'm just looking for some feedback (mainly on the motherboard aspect) as I'm looking to overclock the chip in the future.

CPU is the i7-8700k.
RAM is the G.Skill Trident Z 16GB @ 3600MHz
Mobo is the Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Ultra

I already have all of the other components (M2 drive, AIO, PSU etc). If there are other boards that are slightly more expensive but worth it in cost I can possibly stretch a little extra.

It will be solid, and features one of the best on board audio, but hard to recommend 8th gen Intel's when 9th gen 8 core and z390 will be coming out soon , most likely October

Thanks for the reply, I didn't know about the new gen release being so soon, I'll have a look at some information about it and possibly hold out until then.

I5 9600k 6 cores 6 threads ,I7 9700 8 cores 8 threads, i9 9900k 8 cores 16 threads.

8700k will phase out but at 6/12 threads in theory would have more processing power then 9700k in some cases..

It looks very tempting, I watched a few YT videos on it and I don't know whether to hold out or buy now, as there is no official release date as of yet.

Push the Aorus 5/7 board and then you can always slap in a 9900k in few years time second hand if needs be , though if current i7 4 cores have last 7+ years... Should last you a while !

Are you referencing to this Aorus?

That's the one, much better VRMs set up ! And will handle 8 cores better in the future if you wish, shame Aorus 5 out of stock or pulled off

Also recommend this ram !!!

Cheaper. RGB and is Samsung B-Die

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £238.69 (includes shipping: £8.70)

Aorus also have their own kit, Samsung B-Die with 2 sticks and 2 fake RGB sticks . Costs a lot more and more of a nice novity or style thing

Appreciate the help, I do quite like the look of the Aorus so I'm a little torn haha. Also thanks for the RAM recommendation.

No worries, have a quick Google around . Bios slicker with Asus , but gigabyte swung a lot of people around here due to the reps.. few of them , laptop section is crawling

Yes but was to lazy to log in haha :)

OP should have free shipping knocking down the price :)

@orbitwalsh another quick question in reference to the RAM, is there any significant difference between 3600MHz and 4000MHz? (For the ram you've recommended).

I know the Corsair is Samsung B-Die . The 3600hz trident should be ... But you'll have to check the serial code. To be fair, intel systems doesn't matter but everyone wants to pay for the best components for your cash .
Just happens to be cheaper at the moment haha

Appreciate the response :) I've forgotten how difficult it is to choose parts for a new pc.

You don't need to overspend on the Ram unless you like the look of a certain kit. Any 3000MHz - 3200MHz etc kit would do just fine.
