I7 8700K cooler under £35? (with some OC potential)

I'm looking for an I7 8700K cooling solution for under £35. The height needs to be under 160mm.

Would like some potential overclocking ability as well, doesn't have to be crazy, even just a little.

I know, it's a strange request, but this is only temporary. Atm, I'm only using a GTX 970. When I upgrade the GPU (which, I have no idea when that will be, but will be a 1080Ti or higher) then I'll get a much better cooling solution for better overclock. Atm, I just need something good enough for now.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I'm going for a relatively small mATX build:

Case: CiT F3 mATX case, max CPU cooler height is 160mm

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370 mATX board

Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x 4GB) 3600MHz DDR4

PSU: Corsair CX600M

**Do not link to competitors**

You arn't suppose to put competitors links here not only that but 8GB RAM with a 8700k is a bad idea, you'll want at least 16GB, also spend more on the case if you are spending that much on hardware.

So cooler must be 160mm tall or less, 74mm or less center CPU toward PCIe and have at last 28.5mm from CPU to bottom of fins. This means there are all kinds of coolers that will fit. The only clearance issue is 160mm height, and there are many very good coolers 160mm or less in height, but not many less than £35.00.

Raijintek Ereboss is £35.99
It measures 140×110.5×160 mm [W×H×D] and has about 44mm CPU to bottom of fins. The fan is 140x150x13 mm, so will not fit over RAM but it's 13mm thickness should just fit behind RAM.

Thanks, doyll for clarifying the measurements. I'm willing to spend up to ~£60. What are my options there? I hear a lot of good things about Noctua coolers, someone recommended me the Noctua NH-U14S, but I don't think that one will fit.

Thanks for the replies, everyone; apologies for linking other sites, next time I'll link directly to this site. As for the 8GB; I've used 8GB for years, it's fine for what I do; I'm more concerned with RAM speed than having more of it. When I eventually upgrade the GPU, perhaps I will add more RAM then. With the case, I wanted an matx smaller case, and despite its cheapness, I really love the design.

I would pay a bit more and get a Noctua D15s, this will last you for many years of upgrades and is the best air cooler on the market.

PH-TC14PE without front fan (might be able to go 2x fans pull / pull), remove or replace thumb screw in mount crossbar so middle fan can be lowered flush with top of cooler.£59.99

Silverstone HE01 is quite good for little over 40 quid, OcUK does not sell it, but it is available in UK on river site.

NH-D15S has same basic cooling to noise and is £73

Will the NH-D15S fit okay on my board/ in my case? I'm most likely going to get it.

Edit: Will be getting the NH-D15S. If it doesn't fit in the case, I can always return the case and get a wider one. I don't have the motherboard yet, so I can't measure it properly, sadly.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I have just upgraded to an 8700k . I did do quite a bit of research . I purchased the arctic freezer 33 . so [email protected] on all cores after cinebench were 72c [email protected] were 92c . only £27 as well . 150 mm high so plenty small enough . hope that helps
edit I tried push/pull and only lowered the temps by one or two degrees

I bought the Noctua NH-D15s at Christmas time. Excellent cooler. Efficient, nice build, easy install and good temps. I happen to have taken it off after a months use as I fancied messing around with watercooling. You can see my post in the watercooling forum.

My noctua is back in the box with all its bits. I'd be happy to release it to you. If this isn't etiquette then I can just advertise it on Gumtree and you can pick up from there, or e-bay and waste money on fees. Whatever. Anyway, it is sitting in the box tucked away and could do with a new home if you want it.

Cheers,
Steven RW

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £47.34 (includes shipping: £7.39)

ran my i7 8700k whilst i was getting water kit ready- used Gigabytes Pre-loaded OC which pumps A LOT of voltage .... 4.8Ghz @ 1.42v was 90c using Asus Realbench/ Intel xtreme stress test and 70c whilst gaming.
Manual OC this would run under 1.35v easily and less heat! but even as the experiment above, with fan 100%, still sounded quieter then most and cleared ram just fine
