i7-920 can not get to 4GHz

Multiplier set to x21 blk set to 191, QPI 1.375 and Vcore 1.375 temperatures will hit 81ºc maximum

With 1.7 pll I'm getting temperatures around 70ºc

with 1.6 pll it was stable for arond 20 mins

Apologies I had this wrong - temps are still around 80ºc not 70ºc

I am trying the new memory timings with 1.7 pll as it seems more stable. I will go to 1.8 pll should it be unstable

OK Something strange is happening....For some reason, lets call it divine inspiration!! :) I decided that with the new memory settings (9-9-9-24) and 1.7 pll I hadn't had the QPI on lower settings so My new settings are as follows

Wit the above settings I am now 4 hrs and 20 min stable and counting!! I will up date when either it fails or this evening if it is still going. Temps are at 83ºc peak (2 hrs ago)

Well it was too good to last it all froze at 4.5 hrs - I have tried reducing the QPI and so far I'm at 30 mins......

Nameless 87 - I'm probably not the best person to ask considering the issues that I have been having, maybe you could copy my BIOS settings or did you read the guide linked to at the start of this thread? Link

I've actually not had much freezing when overclocking, it is more BSOD or random restarts. Make sure you have Auto Restart off as well so if it does BSOD you can see the code. Good guide on the codes here if it does: http://www.overclock.net/general-pr...0091-complete-list-bsod-codes-when-ocing.html

I've had some strange chips in my time as well, overclocking one at the moment that requires silly QPI to get it to not BSOD under stress. If you keep getting the issues either lower the ram divider or up the QPI to see if that helps.

The same codes are in the overclocking page I linked at the start of the thread - but thanks all the same. I would love to be getting some BSODs then at least I would have some guidance on what needs changing. I have had QPI to 1.375 I don't know if I want to push it harder than that so maybe I'll try the divider if I get no joy playing round with lowering the QPI. Just out of interest what is the max QPI I should push to?

Something you should keep in mind is that not all chips will do 4ghx, i have had 5 i7 chips all did 4ghz except 1 which would do 3.8 and not for 4ghz even with 1.4vcore. That was on asus rex 3 so the board is well capable. On my gig rig i used 1.6pll without problems for 2 years

Yeah it would be a little annoying if I can't reach 4GHz but I really want to be sure I can't get 4GHz before I give up. I know that if I can't get there I'll start looking at the sandy bridges or a bulldozer and I really can't justify spending money on those at the moment with all the expenses of a new house and new daughter

You seem to be getting same problems as me Nameless 87 I hope that we both start getting some better results soon - its so frustrating...

Tried decreasing QPI from 1.375 in stages all the way back to 1.295 and it is clear that the system is most stable at 1.315. I also tried increasing from 1.375 to 1.395 and 1.415 and the machine froze the instant I started Prime 95.

I am therefore setting my QPI back to 1.315 and increasing the vcore up from 1.375 to 1.395

I have been following this thread since last weekend and I haven't had much time to overclock. I have had no more success.

Reading Nameless 87's posts and the suggestions he has been given I think that I will give the 6 multiplier a go. However to try and keep the memory speed up I will try the CPU with a multiplier of 19 and a blk of 211. I've dropped my CPU vcore to 1.3 at the moment and left the QPI on auto. If this is successful I will try and find a stable QPI before I play around with CPU multiplier and the blk in order to increase the memory frequency whilst maintaining a 4GHz overclock

I forgot the Blk also affects QPI link speed with it being so high of course its going to be unstable - I will keep working on getting the QPI stable

didn't get to set the QPI last night before I went to bed. I left it running with the QPI set to auto and the vcore set to 1.3. this morning I have a 0xD1 error - increase/decrease the QPI as necessary

Its set to auto! - anyone got any suggestions??

Should I ignore this BSOD and start using set values and wait for different error codes?

I seem to have a stable overclock of 4GHz!!! However its with the memory multiplier at 6 not 8. Currently I'm using the 21 multiplier, I am going to try and use the 20 multiplier to gain extra memory speed.

For future reference if someone else wants my BIOS Settings
