i7-920 can not get to 4GHz

Trying various changes but all of them ended up in desktop freezing before even running linx.

QPI 1.38 and Vcore 1.3 linx stopped in 3m 40 sec
QPI 1.36 and Vcore 1.3 linx stopped in 3m 8 sec

Should I increase QPI to 1.4?

Yes, put Vcore at 1.35 as well. Everything else on Auto. Make sure Ram Voltage is 1.66 and the correct timings are manually entered.

I tried vcore 1.3-1.35, ram from auto to 1.68, qpi from 1.3 to 1.38...

dunno what to do anymore, sometimes it just freezes before going to the desktop, other times it freezes 5 secs on desktop.

I also tried everything on auto including vcore and qpi and memory set to 8.0 and it went into desktop for about 10 seconds...

I'm beginning to suspect that my memory is the problem. Will run a full memtest86 on stock settings (2.66ghz) and ram on 1600MHz during the night and see what the results are.

What do you guys thing? Getting pretty desperate here :(

You might as well skip that and go straight for the overclocked settings. If it fails or reboots while running the test then thats the source of your problems.

Hi,

I ran memtest86 overnight everything at stock and memory at 1600MHz. Test ran for over 8 hours with 14 passes and no errors.

Memtest86 Result

I also ran LinX (all memory, 20 counts) and IntelBurnTest (maximum, 3 counts) and prime95 blend(18.5 hours) with QPI 1.34V and Vcore 1.275V and Memory Multiplier at 6.0. Every test passed and ran fine.

Now I will lower QPI to get it stable with low QPI and the next step will be to get the memory to 8.0 since now I am sure it can be done due to memtest86 not reporting any errors.

Opinions?

Thanks

As I mentioned before running Memtest86 on the stock settings was a waste of time, you need to run it at overclocked settings to see if you get errors.

That is fair enough but two runs would be enough, 14 is just overkill. Also I'd use Memtest86+, you can create a bootable USB flash drive from the utility on their website.

Next I'd set it to your stable settings, up the divder to 8.0 and run Memtest86+

Memtest86+ with memory multiplier at 8.0 ran fine without errors for 2 loops which is enough I think.

I also managed to get my CPU stable with the following settings:

Uncore x16
SPD 6.0
VCore 1.275V
QPI 1.22V
IOH Core 1.1V
Everything else on Auto

Been reading this guide.

Passed LinX 20 counts all memory
1 hour prime 95 blend
IntelBurnTest 5 counts, 8 threads, maximum stress

The only thing remaining is increasing the SPD and make it stable :)

I tried it with same settings and increasing SPD to 8.0 and DRAM to 1.66V. It is not crashing or freezing anymore. It passes IntelBurnTest (maximum, 5 cuonts) but failes within 2 counts of LinX.

Any idea on what to increase/decrease to make it pass LinX?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry too much, if it is stable under Prime95, IntelBurnTest, 3DMark Vantage (or other video card benchmarking) loops and your usual activities (gaming etc) then that is fine.

Looks like you have a pretty decent 920 considering the low voltages you are using.

Thanks :)

Yeah I thought so too... it had to be something I did lol

Well it was my first time overclocking, so it was expected that I'd sc*** something up lol... but I sure learned a lot.

Will run IntelBurnTest with 10 counts, prime95 blend for 12 hours, prime95 small ftt for another 12 hours and see what happens. Will also check out 3DMark Vantage... should I update video card drivers before?

Thanks

Drivers don't really matter for 3DMark but it pays to keep them updated for games, 3DMark Vantage is pretty CPU intensive for a GPU benchmark. That or just play your usual games, all these synthetic stress tests passing mean nothing if the system is unstable when you are using it for things you do everyday!

ok.. its far from ready....

just realized that I had the Timing selectable on auto and CPU-Z read the memory at 10-11-11-21 :/

I want them 8-8-8-24 like they were made to... So I selected Quick and inputted those values...

however now I can't get it to stay in desktop for more than 5 seconds of IntelBurnTest, sometimes it freezes before going to the desktop.

What should I do? Is it a matter of increasing the QPI/VTT? Cause I am up to 1.38 and no change... going to try 1.4 and see what happens

I have been following this thread since last weekend and I haven't had much time to overclock. I have had no more success.

Reading Nameless 87's posts and the suggestions he has been given I think that I will give the 6 multiplier a go. However to try and keep the memory speed up I will try the CPU with a multiplier of 19 and a blk of 211. I've dropped my CPU vcore to 1.3 at the moment and left the QPI on auto. If this is successful I will try and find a stable QPI before I play around with CPU multiplier and the blk in order to increase the memory frequency whilst maintaining a 4GHz overclock
