So my current specs are:

i7 920 STOCK + noctua nh-d14
Gigabyte UD5 > http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2958#ov
3 x 2gb 1600mhz
nvidia GTX980
120gb Crucial M4
Corsair 750watt

I just got the 780 in the OC sale and its great, really happy with it.

Problem im having is my CPU seems to be showing its age a bit now im not using a 7 year old GPU.

I know the chip can clock rather well and I have a great air cooler.

Wondering if anyone has any guides/tips/instructions for me to get a decent clock, aiming for maybe 3.4ghz which doesnt sound crazy compared to some people.

3.8ghz should be doable with that cooler

set the bclk to 21x181

set memory multi to 8x
uncore frequency to 16x
cpu voltage to normal
dvid to +0.0750v
enable all powersaving in bios and disable c1e
set cpu/vtt to 1.32v to 1.35v
and set the ram timings and dram voltage according to your memory

stress cpu with prime95 while you have cpu-z open and make a note of the cpu voltage under load

adjust the dvid if unstable or too much voltage

try to stay around 80c or below and 1.4v or below cpu voltage (you should only need around 1.3v-1.35v cpu voltage while stressing)

rest can stay on auto/enabled

Id say 4ghz should be pretty easy for a cooler as good as the D14. Very similar in performance to the k2 I have. Used it on a 920 @4.2ghz, sub 70c p95 temps. Ahh the days of proper soldered chips.:D

I just replaced my i7 950 with a xeon x5660. Bought the xeon for £45 and sold the i7 for £39 really cheap upgrade and I also bought a 780 on sale here and its running everything i've thrown at it on max at 1080p :)

you could probably do 4.2ghz but best to start slowly:D

I regret selling my ud5,that was a very silly thing to do

Ok lots of info, will try this out tomorrow.

I continue to be impressed with this CPU, its 5 years old and its only now really showing a bit of age in Wildstar. Really hope i can get another year or two out of this chip.

Thanks for all the info guys, will report back when i attempt this :)

As do I! Been running one for 6/7 years now - definitely the best value CPU I've ever bought. I think it shows the sad state of affairs with how little CPU's have come on, in terms of meaningful performance gains.

Was that a straight swap? Anything you needed to do with bios etc? Seems like a great way to extend the life of the system.
