I have the CPU above and its currently hitting 60-65 on idle 90 on intel burn test. I can constantly hear the fans throttling. I'm using an old ( 5 years maybe) antec 620 liquid cooler. I changed the paste no more than a month or two ago.

I know these i7 run hot anyway, but is this too hot?

is it worth while throwing a new water cooler or air cooler at it? I would like to keep the i7 as long as possible as at 1080p it runs everything ok

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £90.43
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Have you tried just re-seating the current cpu block? you might have a poor connection. Likewise, do you know if the water cooler is running fine because those temps do sound high - as mickyfinn suggested, a good clean out can really improve things, but if it's, say, leaked some of the fluid out (which is unlikely I know) then it might not be running to it's original capability.

its all clean no dust, no harm in me re doing the past at weekend, matbe i had to much on before.

it might be my overclock is just high, its 2.66 to 3.85.. but i know people have 4 with no probs

I cant tell u that at present..will have to look it up tomorrow..

I'm not very good at overclocking., I had to copy one of youtube

5 years, maybe the AIO pump isn't that strong anymore, fluids flowing slower so temp rose up. Try getting something like a Noctua DH14 or whatever it's called, if you can fit it, I've read it beats most 120mm AIOs and the only thing to fail are fans in there.

Do aio water coolers get worse as they get older? I thought they would perform the same until the day it fails as they're a closed system and all. Surely the water pump isn't 'all that complicated' as it doesn't need to do variable speed or anything, and the water is Special Water I assume?

I'm discounting dust in the radiator which I am very OCD about lol.

Edit- how do the pumps actually work? Is it a little impellor?

A little what? :D As special as water is in them, treated with biocides and stuff, I don't think they're expected to work for 5+ years, so I'd say you got a pretty good unit. I think after a while the stuff in the water stops working gradually and you have all kinds of trash getting stuck in your block and rad start to build up slowly over time. Hence all the recommendations to change water / treat your system in a closed loops every 9-12 months, I don't suppose AIOs are expected to hold up much of their cooling potential after warranty expires.

Edit: now that I think about it, might be your CPU was just a bad pick and degraded more than expected, maybe it started requiring more volts, equals more heat

Yeah wouldn't be surprised if the unit has ceased up with age. Clean it, reseat and retest. If you still get high temps, it's probably the cooler thats knackered.
