i7 960

No idea when they are getting them in, probably should drop them a webnote.

As for recommending one over a 920, it depends. Will you be custom water/phase cooling it or air cooling? If its air, then the 920 will happily go to 4GHz and be manageable. If you want to go faster than that (with advanced cooling) then getting the 960 can make sense, as the higher multi will allow you to go higher without running into BCLK limits.

However, depending on you application the upcoming i7 - 980X Hex core might be worth a look. Its even more expensive than the 960 - but with 2 extra cores and a 32nm process it may be worth it for you.

cheers for quick response, just sent a webnote!

im going to be air cooling to start with as cant afford new, mb, cpu ram and w/c setup all at the same time.

will be looking to get it w/c as soon as possible though.

im not sure about these new 6 core cpu's....
i mainly game on my machine, but i do use it for watching movies on as its hooked up to tv in bedroom.

i do use some software when converting my blu-rays that uses all 4 cores but i think most of the stuff i use is dual core stuff. if i get a 6-core cpu how would it benifit me over a quad with higher clock?

mabey im missing something though..

what kinda results could you expect to see under w/c with an i7 960?

For gaming and watching movies, the i7 920 (and 960) are no better than an i5 750. There simply isn't a performance advantage as you are almost always limited by the GPU (this remains true, even with a beast like the 5970).

For video conversion, some programs are properly multi-threaded - so will make use of as many cores as you can throw at them. But you probably should consider how much of your time will be taken up with CPU heavy tasks like this. If it isn't a lot - then you may want to consider going for a cheaper/less powerful CPU and invest more in graphics/bank account.

I got a Gigabyte UD7 and 6 gig 1600 DDR3 from ocuk but got a 960 DO SLBEU OEM elsewhere (sorry). It is twice the 920 price and I had to compromise on what else I bought for my new system. However, the extra multis give me good headroom in taking it past 4.8GHz. Is it worth it over a 920? definitely not but what the hell. No flames please, I know it's pure indulgence.

Indeed, the higher multiplier would help taking it over 4.8ghz. However if you're not on significantly sub zero cooling you're not going to get anywhere near that.

I hope for your sake you're on something better than high end water.
