Hi Guys!
I`m having serious trouble overclocking my i7 970 chip.

My current setup is:
i7 970 es
GA-X58A-UD5 rev1 (bios f6- latest stable)
6gb corsair 1600mhz ram (3x2gb)
cooling: at the moment corsair h50 but getting nh-d14 next week :)

I have tried various settings in the bios after reading various guides and templates found on the net. I was able to boot into windows @4.0 but usually bsod after 5-6 mins of prime95. Temps were always ok - never more than 72C.

Tried various settings, ex:
200x20
qpi/vtt 1.35
cpu vcore 1.28
Ram 1.66
Tries upping vcore but no help. Tried playing up with vcore, qpi, pll, ich, ioh but no luck.

Many thanks in advance!

Can someone please help me with overclocking my system? I`m looking for 4.0 or 4.2 for 24/7 use.

1st thing I would do is eliminate the memory as an issue, run memtest (if your running this at stock then this is probably ok).

I have found (on my 860 which may or may not be relevant) that with higher base clocks I need a higher Vtt (1.35 is the absolute max for your chip so your already at risk, according to intel anyhow) regardless of RAM multi, try a higher CPU multi and lower base clock.

other than that, it may well be that you just cant get to 4GHz within reasonable voltage/temp limits.

hope this helps

Thank you for your replays.
Regarding ram it`s rated 1600mhz. I tried running it at 1600 and 1333. I tested ram with memtest and passes with no errors.
I`ll be changing my ram in about a month time as I need 12gb and thinking of getting mushkin blackline kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Mushk...111?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b6c506c7 or should I get 200mhz kit?

At the moment I`m trying 166x24 with cpu vcore=1.287 and vtt=1.3. I do pass intelliburn test but when start priming after few minuntes black screen and reboot. And actually I`m not getting blue screens but black screen and reboot. I have checked system logs and looks like it`s caused by power failure.. I get critical - kernel power code 41 error.

you shouldnt even really need to touch any voltage settings at around 4 ghz...its only once you really start to push it you need to increase voltages....your 1600mhz ram will be limiting your overclock..if your putting in 12 gb soon i would suggest corsair dominator so you can be sure your going to be able to get it to 4ghz + stable

edit- is that a engineering sample 970 you have?

Thanks Justintime. I`m trying now upping vcore bit more. When I start priming I get reboot after 10-15 mnins. Will try to go up more on vcore. Yes I do have llc enabled- tried with auto, standard and now i`m on llc profile1.

Yes cammy5477 it`s a es chip bought on ebay form taiwan.
In regards to ram what do you think about this- http://www.ramexperts.com/ddr3/perf...28gb-pc3-16000-9-11-9-27-ridgeback-1-65v.html ? I would like to try something different than corsair and heard many good words about mushkin (and it`s cheaper).

I've had 2 970s pass through here, final build was at 4GHz and 4.3Ghz respectively, 1.33v and 1.35v needed for stability, also he should be able to run his ram within spec or close even at 200, it won't hold back his overclock. Weren't the ES chips a little on the fragile side though? memory fails me on that subject.

i had a 980x for a bit and that would do 4.4 - 4.5ghz at 1.28v..granted it has an unlocked multi but is basically the same chip.....what corsair do you have?

cant comment about mushkin buddy never had any :)

that ram looks good and lifetime warrenty cant really go wrong dont think you will get it to run at 2000mhz though with 12 gb

Yep the rig i built for my mate was a 980X @ 4.5Ghz 1.29v but a lot of them need over 1.3v and his is an ES chip, were those high clockers?

Hey! Thanks for all the help and input! So far I managed to get it stable with current settings:
166x24
QPI Clock ratio x36
Ram 2x8
Cpu vcore 1.343 (cpu-z shows 1.328)
QPI/VTT 1.32
Temps are not going more than 74C whats ok with my current cooling- h50.

Can`t wait to get my nh-d14..

So do you think I should get 1600 or 2000 mhz memory?

What do you advise to go above 4ghz?
