Hey guys,

Its that time again for me to upgrade. Currently im running a intel i5 6600k with I think Asus z170 pro gaming board. Im looking at upgrading the cpu n board for now. Ive got a 1080 strix 8gb but one of the more expensive ones at time bought. Think it has a boost of 2088mhz. Is the i7 compaitible with the board I already own or will I need to buy a new one? I bought a new case a phanteks enthoo x I think its called a few months back and its been waiting for this upgrade ever since. So do I need a new board?and is this cpu a gd choice? I think id probably buy a new board anyway cus dont really fancy taking it out of my current case to install in my new one. Any suggestions on board? You guys are great, thanks

The 9700k isn't compatible with the z170 platform. Only z370 and z390 and the latter is arguably better due to the better power delivery and slightly more features vs z370.
So that at least answers one of your questions :)

You might be better off asking in the upgrade advice section for component advice. Give them a list of what you intend to do with your pc and they should be able to price up some hardware for you.
Unless you are determined to go intel or are gaming exclusively at 1080p and high refresh rates, i can tell you now the advice will probably be to go ryzen, that or, wait 6 months and buy ryzen 3xxx.

Edit - to be clear, there is nothing wrong with buying Intel, but for price to performance Ryzen wins easily and for many cases will be nearly as fast as a competing Intel CPU for much less money. Depending on what you are doing it could be faster and cheaper in your chosen workload, or close enough that you wouldn't notice the difference.
I own a 9900k btw so there is no AMD bias here. They are simply the better value option right now unless you have a need for something the Intel CPU does better than ryzen and dont mind paying for it.

I use my pc solely for gaming, some video watching but thats it. Ive always had intel apart from a couple of times in the past and it put me off AMD for good so intel is a must for me. So youre saying I need a z390, does this look good enough?

Thankyou for taking the time to help me out Distracted, very kind of you
I have the usual 16gb ddr with 2 x ssds n one nvme totalling 1gb in all
My graphics card is a strix 1080 so matches the board.
btw I game on a 2k 32inch curved Samsung monitor

The Hero is a solid board. You pay a premium for the bios and asus name but it shouldnt let you down.

Gigabyte offers 'better' power delivery for less but in real terms you wont notice it. The Asus board will clock as high as any other in the price range and the bios will make it easier.

But if you want to save some cash then gigabyte has worked hard on their VRMs this time round so their z390 lineup is supposed to have very good power delivery.

I have the Asus Formula which is very similar to the Hero and I've had no issues overclocking.

See if you can pick up a i7 7700k (will probably need a motherboard bios update) second hand for a reasonable price (don't pay the new price) which would be the chapest and least hassle option.
