hi

was thinking of buying a new shiny Graphics card ATI 6990 but thought hmm maybe i would be better upgrading Cpu,Board and memory 1st

I have a Q6600 running at 3.4Ghz Liquid Cooled,
with 4gb or DDR2 ram 5-5-5-15

thinking of switching to this

Intel Core i7 2600K Unlocked, 1155, Sandy Bridge, Qd Core, 3.4 GHz, GPU 850Mhz, 8MB Cache, 95W, OEM
8GB (4x2GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3 Dominator, PC3-10666 (1333), Non-ECC, CL 9-9-9-24, DHX, XMP, 1.5V
Gigabyte GA-PH67A-UD3-B3, Intel H67, S 1155, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 1333, SATA 6Gb/s, RAID, ATX

Oh and correct me if am wrong but my water block on my 775 socket should fit the 1155 socket right!

Thoughts Please
:D

you will want to change the motherboard to a P67 series. cant remember what it is with them, but it is almost impossible to overclock with the H series motherboards.

also, what is the computer being used for?

In that case, any more than 2x2GB of RAM isn't worth it, and the i5 2500K will be better than the i7 2600K, for a lot less money. Pretty sure your water block should transfer over, as 775 and 1155 seem to be compatible for cooling.

Oh, and don't get a 6990 unless you're playing games over at least 3 screens at the same time. What resolution do you play on?

In that case, the 6990 is perfect :)

Still stick by my guns with the RAM and the i7 though- the i5 is better for gaming, and 32-bit processes (such as games) can't use more than 2GB of RAM at a time anyway.

depends on the water block, some will fit with a change of mounting kit/plate, & some won't fit at all because they haven't been updated ( D-Tek fusion springs to mind in the won't fit category ).

ok thanks

so am better going for this

Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, 1155, Sdy Bridge, QuadCore, 3.3GHz, GPU 850Mhz, 6MB Cache, 95W, Retail
8GB (4x2GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3 Dominator, PC3-10666 (1333), Non-ECC, CL 9-9-9-24, DHX, XMP, 1.5V
Asus P8P67 LE Rev3, Intel P67, S1155, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 2200(OC), SATA 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX

last thing of all is am I better going for 1333 or 1600 memory was thinking of this

4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 PC3-12800(1600), CAS 7-8-7-20, XMP, DHX, New Connectors, 1.65V

as i would like to clock it upto at least 4ghz

The Sandy Bridge unlocked "K" processors have an unlocked multiplier, and hence overclocking may be done completely independently of memory speed.

For this reason, and due to the fact that memory speed of itself has zero effect on gaming, just get whichever DDR3 is cheapest.
