Hi,
This is my first i7, so i obviously want to get it right.
Now i've done many pcs before, and i've checked the circle cutouts on the cpu are matching, so technically from this picture it looks right?

Though when i go to clamp it down, it seems as if it's an extremely hard clamp, and am worried i'll damage the cpu (as i've never fitted an i7 before!)
i just wanted to check the clamping is very tight on the cpu to the mobo, and wanted to make sure its meant to be like this before i put the clamp on :)

ok cheers, i was like like wtf, never had such a tight clamp before :p
i will be posting a build log once it's near completion, effort atm!

Yeah most intel cpu's installation to mobo feels like you might break something, it's the same when installing intel stock heatsinks, i always feel as though i'll snap the motherboard. Fine once you get confident with pc hardware. Nice cpu, is that a quad core i7 at 3.6GHz?.

Oh yeah, it's the 950 at 3.06GHz.

It is a very tight clamp- the lever arm on mine is bowed under strain.

All perfectly normal and does not affect the chip.

I had the same misgivings when I first fitted my i7 920, but when you think about it, it has nearly twice as many pins as a 775 chip, so the pressure is spread over twice the surface area, I guess they felt the need to increase the tension to ensure a sound connection.

what i also found really weird is having no actual pins, just the copper (i assume) connectors the cpu & mobo, i was pretty sure my previous q6600 had actual pins? :D

When i first installed my 920 I felt the same. Felt very tight. Just how we like it. In short, nothing to worry about. Have fun with your new CPU!

Nah... q6600 is the same, you must be thinking of something older or an amd chip or something. That's what the LGA stands for... Land Grid Array. It means the chip just has contacts on it. Chips with pins on are technically called "Pin Grid Array".

Yeh like really old intel and AMD's have a stack in my loft gathering dust haha no point in selling... will cost me more on listing fees at a certain auction site]

anyway this was a good thread to stumble on... upgrading soon so i wont have to worry .. or otherwise you could have had another post with me saying
"the clamp arm is bendin!!!"
