As far as I know this chip is clocked at 4Ghz with a turbo of 4.4Ghz

Is it worth overclocking it to 4.6Ghz? Doesn't seem much more of a gain to me?

Might as well leave it at stock for such a puny gain.

Thoughts guys and correct me if I am wrong?

if you already have the cooling why not?

if it's stock speed with stock cooler then no it's not worth it

You are not getting much more out of it than stock speeds though.

As far as I know by looking at reviews the chip will only overclock to 4.6Ghz

Is it worth overclocking for the minimum that you will get?

Although a slightly different chip I have two 4770k. One is in my gaming PC and clocked at 4.4Ghz and is coupled with 8GB 1866 and a 250GB Evo SSD. The other is in my HTPC clocked at 4.0Ghz and is coupled with 16GB 2400 and a 120GB Evo SSD. For normal use they are identical, both are lightning quick. In benchmarks the gaming PC is slightly quicker but this only shows in benchmarks, in games and general use you can't tell the difference. If you have an aftermarket cooler then go for it but don't expect anything outside of benchmarks.

Disappointed with Devil's Canyon myself. Just my opinion.

I got my 4790K up to 4.80GHZ game and bench stable on lower temps and volts than my 4770K, Just depends on the silicon lottery as usual :)

a stock clocked 4790k beats my 3770k @ 4.8ghz

just depends i suppose,if you get a coolish running/low voltage chip you could eek out a few more MHz but personally id be happy at stock

It all depends on what you want? As far as I'm concerned Devil's Canyon was a big disappointment. Intel were talking about 5Ghz and over on air.

Intel failed big time. 4.6GHz is all it will do.

overhyped as always

5ghz on air 24/7 is a huge ask imo

maybe a few more generations down the line, they just raised the default clock speed to make it look good, but nothing more than overclockers have been doing for years

Well, one of my main reason for pushing a CPU oc is to keep minimum fops up as much as possible in games.

Which comes into play more with multiple gpu's.

So I will take what ever I can get :)

4.6GHz is all mine will do.

Fixed for you!

Honestly it's silicone lottery, some will only do 4.5-4.6, some will break above that to the 4.8/4.9 area and a lucky few will get a 5ghz chip.

For people who like to push their hardware 4.8 at less temps than a 3770k/4770k is very respectable.

Coming stock at 4.4 turbo is good for everyone not just overclockers.

megahertz - One million cycles per second , meaning even 100 Mhz is a gain to computational speed. You might not notice it in the real world but it's there and it's free performance gain, Those with their operating system on fast ssd's will be reaping the benefit.

Interesting this as I was wondering the exact same thing.

Obviously only one core turbos to 4.4ghz but that would be fine for me.

Is it possible to find out an idea of how you've done in the lottery with the stock cooler?

I don't have a cooler but would get one if I ended up with a decent clocker.
