hes using a 26in HD moniter (720p)

has to be within 600-700 pound, can it be done lol ?

What will it be used for? Video editing? Gaming?

But I think more realistically you're looking at £800 min.

Trying to skimp on a i7 build at the cost of other components is not worth it in the end.

A non i7 build will net you a much more powerful system for the same money when trying to do it on the cheap.

eg. a much better graphics cards if he's gaming.

What's the difference between the OEM version and the retail version, I know that the OEM version is usually a plain old box but is there any other difference?

It is possible:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM £241.49

Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £187.44

Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (90-C1CLC0-J0UAY00Z) £120.74

Corsair 3GB DDR3 XMS3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz (3x1GB) Triple Channel DDR3 (TR3X3G1600C9) £86.24

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply £71.29

Total Inc Vat & Shipping: £735.94

Not the best components, but its an i7!

Don't think you've got anything to cool teh CPU there. Not going to carry you over £800 anyway though.

An i7 for £700 basically leaves you with the Dell XPS i7 as the only option. At that price you get a cr*ppy graphics card and a PSU that will soon run out of puff, but it is an i7...

It depends if you're going for an "he wants an i7 so I'll give him an i7" attitude (= the dell), or a "give him the best PC he can get for the money".

We've all seen stubborn clients who want the latest buzz word regardless of practicality. I'd be tempted to go for a decent Core2Quad and a GTX280. He'll really notice the difference in gaming, and it won't be too detrimental in video editing.

He doesn't get to brag about his awesome i7 rig, but those bragging rights come with an £800+ price tag that he can't afford.

thats exactly what i thought Audigex, i'm going to talk to him about the quad core, becuase he can get more power for his money rather than a cheap i7 system, he should swing around especially if i say i can get him one fo the best cards on the market in there :)
