i7 memory issue

I've been thinking about upgrading my standard cheapo memory to a decent 1600mhz triple channel kit for a while. However i'm rather stuck as to whether i should get a 3gb or a 6gb kit.

I predominantly use my comp for gaming, occasionally i mess around with photoshop but i do no video editing etc.

So is there any point in me shelling out for a 6gb kit? Or is it just a waste of money for what i use my comp for?

A 3GB kit costs about £70, while you can get this 6GB kit for £80.

Its a pretty big step up for £10 and photoshop loves RAM, so it won't be wasted.

They way things run now days in Vista and Win7 systems I do not really think 3GB is going to get the best from a system. When going with an i7 I think 6GB is a good amount to invest in.

Though prices have gone a bit mad recently.

It also depends on your OS. If you are using any 32bit version of Windows, you won't get anywhere near the full usage of 6GB.

Or at least strongly discouraged.

Most i7s I have seen, due to the amount of PCI address space needed, reserve at least a 1GB block of MMIO space. So, on i7 most users are going to "see" 3GB or less of system memory.

I am running 64 bit vista, so i would see all of the ram if i opted for the 6gb kit.

Thanks for the advice guys it appears that going for a 6gb kit seems to be the best option.
