Hi all

in a few months lets say....june-july am planning on buying a i7....is it worth it or is there a newer CPU coming out thats better also i have been hearing about nehalem and OctCore can anyone who knows more about CPU's shed some light on that thanks.

Isnt the i7 a better and faster CPU than dualcore and quadcore? do you know what nehalem is? is there really going to be a Octcore?

The most demanding thing i do a the moment is just gaming but i would like to be prepared for anything else i might need to do later on....no problems at the moment

Oddly enough in some benchmarks the Phennom II out performs the i7 920 by 5-10fps and is a lot cheaper.

But if you are just doing gaming an E8400 will out perform both.

For gaming? No.

You've already got a very potent rig, I can't see you needing anymore than 3.5GHz for next year or so (in gaming) and you've already got that and then some.

No point spending money for the sake of spending money, unless you're bored and want to play with something new of course. ;)

o right i clearly had the wrong idea about the i7...what about nehalem and octcore any info on thos?

Nehalem is the code name for i7. It's the same thing. Octocore is due later in the year, but considering that quad core still hasn't been fully embraced by programmers, octo cores is going to take a long while yet.

Basically, a CPU upgrade for you at the moment would be pointless.

thanks for the info guys things are lot clearer now....i heard vista is still a problem in some areas and XP is still best for gaming

yer there were driver issues to start with but almost all cleared up now, older hardware may not have 64bit driver support but im running everything fine and i can get all 4 GB or RAM :> i "wasted" my money on ultimate but think it was worth it as it comes with the 64bit CD (from what i understand all the others you have to pay microsoft £10 to send it to you) and comes with all the extras from home and professional and more

i guess most people are voting for vista now right?

Maybe, but I'd be waiting for clarity on Windows 7. The beta is great, and it looks like release will be this year. I wouldn't be buying a new OS right now. There are rumours about free upgrades for Vista users and all, but until that's in black and white I'd treat them as rumours.

I think vista is the better choice now. From what I've seen, when it came out, it was a memory hogging, bugged, glitchy, unsupported, incompatible piece of crap. Now, it's just a memory hogging, slightly incompatible piece of not so bad crap. I'd rather go for vista now than XP, because I think they're pretty much on par, and with all the flashy stuff of vista, and the better computers we have now, it's all good.

As for OctoCore:

1) It's probably a long way off.
2) It's going to be very expensive.
3) It's not going to be much better than a Quad for a while.

For octocore, I'd wait until it comes down to a reasonable price (although if it comes out at the same price as the i7 920 is now, I'd say that's pretty good), and until it's actually utilized.
