i7 socket burn ?

Hey all,

Here's what I discovered on the underside of my i7 920 D0 when I stripped my pc down :

Cpu still works fine and wasn't clocked that high - 3.8ghz / 1.265vcore. Motherboard was a Gigabyte UD3R rev1.6.

I have just switched to a P55 setup as I was planning on selling the i7 cpu / board as they're a bit ott for my needs as I don't need HT or crossfire anymore, but I won't be now :mad:
 
Are you sure its actually burn? Could be a bit of thermal paste (sometimes leaves an oily stain)? It's very easy to dab some on the underside of a chip taking it out.

Get some isopropyl alcohol and some good quality kitchen towl, only a tiny dab, and give it a wipe

Didn't think it would be thermal paste as I never touched the underside of it when installing or removing it.
 
It just looks like a tiny bit of discolouration to me, there doesn't appear to be any damage though. I think a few of the cheaper P55 boards had problems much worse than this shortly after release.

My rule of thumb is to never skimp when it comes to buying motherboard/power supply, the UD3 has cheaper power circuitry doesn't it?
 
It definately wasn't there when I installed it. It doesn't appear to affect the cpu at all, as it was working perfectly before I changed to P55.

I just know that I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand cpu that was marked like that, so I wouldn't be happy selling it on.

There's a thread at the folding forums showing similar discolouration on a 920 and a 930 after a few weeks. Both were in a Gigabyte board funnily enough.
 
IIRC the early P55 burnouts were caused with a particular brand of socket when overclocking/volting heavily, with the lower end motherboards you should always be weary about pushing them too hard though.
 
Most minor almost non-existant case of socket-burn I've ever seen! In fact I'd refer to that as more like socket-slightly-discoloured-from-running-a-little-warm. If you hadn't drawn a circle round it, it'd be hard to notice. The infamous socket burn issue only applied to P55/1156, not X58/1366. I wouldn't have second thoughts about selling that. At least provide a pic, and if you're feeling particularly kind, mention the slight discolouration.
 
Tested it again yesterday.

Still working fine, and is now winging its way to a new home down south :)
