hi guys, i'm not the greatest with pc's so you will need to bare with me. i have a i7700k cpu with a H100i cooler, i am looking at overclocking my cpu so iv'e firstly done a stress test, my cpu has already been running hot recently without much happening which i was slightly concerned about when i did the stress test it was sitting at 100 percent load at like 85-90c it then went to 95 and the pc froze... i restarted it and haven't done anything but this has worried me even more. where do i go with this and what potentially could it be. thew RPM on my H100i never seem to go above 1900 even when really hot and at max load. I Also must add i feel like the pc has been way louder recently and goes really loud then quiet then really loud again and the same thing happens over and over.

Thanks any help would be massively appreciated.

What kind CPU temps are you getting at idle/desktop?
And have you tried with hand if there's temperature difference in AIO's tubes?
(tube leading warm coolant from block to rad should be warmer than return tube)

There are couple possibilities.
Bubblegum/toothpaste greedy Intel put under the heatspreader might be going bad, in which case no cooler can fix it.
Or CPU block's mounting is somehow failing.
Or then it could be normal degradation/wear mechanisms of AIO on its way toward failure.
Because with fans at airplane in take off loud 1900 it should keep stock 7700K cool, if everything else is OK.
But if pump is failing/too much water has permeated through tubing and there's no good coolant flow, then cooling power starts dropping fast.

Hi thanks for the reply just trying to figure out what half that means at the moment. My computer cpu and the h100i are around 20 months old. When I have work load of around 12-15 percent it sits around 55-60. Is this mostly likely to be an easy fix?

Sounds like a issue with the pump in the H100i, have you set it to maximum in the Corsair software or in the BIOS?

I haven’t actually this could be a good shout I’m looking at soon getting a i9900k and a h150i pro. So probably won’t bother replacing the h100i

5 year warranty on that cooler, Corsair will replace it for you if it is faulty.

Brilliant will do this then. As it should certainly never crash on a stress test right ?
Stock quad core would be easy load to keep under controlled temperature for best £30 coolers.
There's definitely something wrong in mounting/TIM or coolant flow with 60C low load temperature.

Heck, with those temperatures CPU might be limiting its boost clocks decreasing performance.

Wait for summer and release of Zen2 Ryzens.
In CES AMD demoed engineering sample matching 9900K's processing power at ~50W lower system power consumption.
And that 8 core/16 thread is likely going to be mainstream model, with 12c/24t being enthusiast level and 16c/32t monster well possible for that 9900K's price level.

Try lowering the core CPU voltage slightly. The default voltage that the BIOS applies can be very conservative. I found that I could lower it by quite a bit on my 6700K before it became unstable with an overclock. The benefit is far lower temps. If you overclock, you might need additional voltage to gain stability again so it's a double-edged sword...
