hi all, i seriosuly think something is wrong with my Noctua NH-U12P, i have reseated it 3 times, twice with the stuff that comes with it, and lastly with arctic silver, now im still at stock speeds but still get temps on full load, using prime at around 70degrees, now is it me or is that too hot for stock????

It's probably about right if you have Hyperthreading enabled.

Remember that not only do i7's have 4 cores but unlike any other CPU before it Hyperthreading ensures that very few parts of those 4 cores are actually idle.

My i7 at 3.8GHz goes between 80-90C under Prime95 load, I've seen it reach 95C still stable. Whereas most CPU's I've owned before it have become unstable at 70C(ish) even at stock.

These things are either very tolerant to heat or Intel made rather exaggerated sensors to deter overclocking.

My i7 920 @ 3.8 under water loads at 78c. So that does seem a bit high to me for stock temperatures.

Hi M8
I have the same chip and cooler
if I run prime 95 it gets no hotter than 45 deg'
how are you verifiying the cpu cooler fan rpm.. I have push pull both set at 1300 rpm full load to get this result ( this is through a NZXT fan controler) and Zalman GS 1000 case with noctua case fans fitted throughout

Im very new to this as well not o/cd yet so just wanted to get stock settings low and then push the chip a bit

Make sure you run 8 threads

I know I thought it odd too but all 8 fully loaded and confirmed... today hottest core got to 48 deg'
cross ref' temp with live data from on board sensor plus real temp and asus probe

when I figure out how to post screenies Ill see if I can post it 4 you

I really can't imagine an i7 running 45C full load, there's something definitely not right there it's perhaps just a sensor bug.

What is your ambient temp/case air flow like eggcup? it will have a big effect on your load temps if the warm air is allowed to build up inside the case.

yeah i'm at 3.8ghz, i7 920, coolermaster v8 and I idle at 35c, overall cpu temp, 45c core temps. 22x,21x,21x,21x 183. Here's the kicker. cpu vcore is 1.16.

Maybe his room is -10

My i7 @ 4Ghz reaches about 67 C under load under water with only the CPU in the loop, a triple rad with 6 fans on it.

my case is an akasa eclipse with the hard drive cage removed, 1 fan in and 1 out the back, my house is quite warm all the tiime, i would say about 22 degrees, plus i have a 260 gtx which seems to kick out a shed load of heat. maybe more fans needed??? (was thinking of going water :) )

i have just noticed something on cpuz, my mutiplier is constantly x21, even though the cores arent under load, it was my understanding that it was meant to be x20 then if it comes under a lot of work it jacks it up to x1???????

Seems like your overclocking at default with too high volts. Its taking it up because you have turbo mode on, which is normal. Put the volts to auto or just reset your setting in your entire bios back to default.

BTW, my CPUs 1.0v at default.

I've just tested my CPU at stock speeds/volts with Turbo on and it also was 70C at load (Prime95 - Large FFT's) with Noctua NH-U12P.

I've run it for the past few months at 3.8 and load is 80C-85C depending on if the heating is on or not, it's never once failed Prime95 or hard crashed.

I'd say your temps are not abnormal, CPU sensors aren't 100% accurate and at the end of the day it will fail Prime95 if it's not happy, if Turbo Mode is switching on then that's definitely a good sign.
