Hi All
I currently have an Intel i9-10850K with a ROG Strix Z490-F Gaming motherboard. I do some gaming but also need my PC to function as a virtualisation lab since my HP server has died on me so I need more cores... Do I have any options or am I stuck with the 10 cores unless I change out the motherboard?

Your stuck at 10 cores on lga 1200 , how many cores do you need ?
I would have upgraded to something like the 13900k if it was possible but looks like its a different socket, I was hoping I had missed something and there was a half-decent upgrade option. Looks like I'm stuck for now

Is it possible to build a cheap second pc/server ?

The other option is my wifes pc which has an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X with a TUF B450-PLUS Gaming which I think is AM4 socket so im guessing a 5950X might work? although I would also need more ram with her rig...

Should work. The motherboard might need a BIOS update to support the 5950X

3950x is even cheaper if mainly for VM

Both motherboards support DDR4, you should be able to swap the memory from your 10850K build to her B450 without an issue.

The TUF-B450 Plus Gaming had so-so VRM's from what I remember, while it should be fine with either the 5950X or 3950X at stock I would ensure the setup has decent airflow.

Remember to update the boards bios.
