i have:

win10
i7 6700 cpu
gtx 2080
maximus viii hero mobo
evga 750g2
trident gskillz ddr4 ram x 16

i was thinking about the i9.

i need to weigh my options.

is an i9 overkill?

it seems like the logical step up to fit with the 2080.

how much difference would it make?

Just because the i9 9900 is LGA 1151 doesn't necessarily mean that the i9-9900 will work on your board. The chipset on the board only supports a certain number of CPU generations. According to the official Asus CPU support list, your board only supports up to the i7-7700K. If you wanted to get an i9 of any type, then you'd need a new motherboard unfortunately.

i see.

oh well, that atleast solves that problem.

there is no way i am going to upgrade any time soon :)

hypothetically, how much difference would an i9 have over an i7 if used with a 2080?

is am curious about diminishing returns etc?

Your 4 core non k' cpu won't do your 2080 many favours in some latest games particularly at 1080P. What res do you game at? I went 6700k to 10850k and don't regret it + some good discounts now on i9's which helps.

There is no i9 support on your motherboard. So in theory if you went with more recent motherboard and 10th gen 8/10 core CPU, that would increase your minimum FPS by a lot with 2080. Gameplay on recent games would be much much smoother. Then again, if you went with new motherboard there is no reason to not consider AMD 5000 series which is a king of the hill at the moment. Keep in mind that your RAM might be too slow for new CPUs as well, depending when/if you upgraded it.

I think that is one of the boards that is frequently modded for coffee lake CPUs. Would obviously be unsupported, but it's not like it's some cheapo H110 board with terrible VRMs.

If you game at 1080p then a CPU upgrade would be good although at 1440p and above the improvement won't be huge so depending on your circumstances it may be worth holding off as new platforms with DDR5/PCIe gen 5.0 arrive later this year.
