Bass Junkies have the JVC KD-G821 which will take a USB flash drive. It looks like you would run the mp3 player from a standard USB cable. It shouldn't sound too bad with decent speakers...

Edit: Mark beat me...I'd take that Kenwood one, will sound much better as well IMO.

I don't know fella, yours seems like a great price, will allow the flash disk to plug right in which will mean you control the tracks from the unit rather than messing around on the player, i'm slightly anti JVC but that only looks like great value.

Would that JVC one take a USB hard drive instead?

Good question, depends which file formats it supports / FAT / FAT32 / NTFS, might be limited buy how much power it can supply and file structure.

I can't seem to find what sort of connection it is, but if its a standard USB connector like you would find in the back of your PC I imagine you could plug any USB device flash/disk device in via a cable. I can't see them having a flash drive hanging straight out of the headunit

.

Ok that JVC looks ideal.

Although funnily enough I can get that Kenwood KDC-W808 for £190, they've got them discounted on the shop floor - although web price is the same

Going to pop in lunchtime and look at that JVC - pretty sure they've got that one in.

Thanks for your help guys - no idea what I'm doing although I know what I want.

What 6.5 inch speakers would you recommend for £70 the pair? And also - the tweeter things - are they best mounted close to the speakers cos my OE ones are miles away from the actual speakers, but I could leave the OE ones there and mount the new ones in some kick plates at foot level.

Do you have tweeter pods already in the Teg merlin? Reason I ask is my Civic had them already...which makes it easier. Best if you can have the tweeters up near head height, hence parallel to the mirrors is good and pretty standard I think.

I run Infinity 6000CS (6") but the 6510CS are pretty much identical although cost a little more than £70 at £99.99. They sound really nice. I got my stuff from Bass Junkies, ask them for some advice about what they have in at the moment. They didn't try to sell me the most expensive speakers, tell them your budget and see what they say.

Edit: I'd seriously try a decent headunit as well though, you will probably find they won't skip. Seriously.

I picked up some Infinity Reference 605cs components from TalkAudio for the sum of £45.

6.5" woofers and dome tweeters... and they sound pretty damn good! Definitely worth the price.

I was going to get the 6500cs's a while back, but I think they've brought a new model out now. Should be around £80.

Check out caraudiodirect.co.uk and take a look at some Rainbow components. Miles better than anything you can buy on the high street :)

Oh, regarding the USB MP3 player, I'm pretty sure you can just get a normal USB pen drive and plug that in.

I know some of the HU's OcUK sell have visible USB ports where you just plug the pen drive straight in.

Yeah, in the dash right next to and pointing up to the windscreen. But the guy in the shop said it's better to have them close to the speakers ideally, although I dont know why tbh.

Anyway, I've got kick plates in the footwells they could go into no problem, but just wondered about the positioning. To be fair the car is somewhat noisy so little things like this wont make a fat lot of difference, all I can hear is engine noise. There's also a fair bit of vibration - the picture in my rear view mirror is a haze all of the time because it buzzes. Little intracacies (sp) are going to be wasted. :p

I echo the Infinity comments, mine sound great and i give them some serious hammer.

Tweeters are best on the dash / mirror backs, lifts the soundstage out of the footwells :)

Nor me, he is talking out of his botty so the system is easy to fit for him by the sounds of things.

The closer the tweeters are to the woofers, the better the integration and blending. The treble won't sound too harsh if the speakers are closer together, not that it really matters in a car.

I take it you don't want to start drilling holes in the door cards to mount the tweeters?

D'oh!... Not feeling too good at the mo... I only scanned the thread ather than reading all of it!... :(

Lol, no problem its a good idea tbh, several ways of doing this each have problems, i think the JVC is a good price but i'm not so sure on thr SQ.

I got the Alpine SPS-171A's for £60, then £8 delivery. Was on a certain auction site off an audio shop. Really has vastly improved the sound in my car, just not that bassy, but i like that.

Accually i just found them. :)

Same people as i delt with, they were quick thinking i sent a cheque to pay for them.

Edit - Those speakers are around £85 from car audio direct and car audio security. So £60 is a v good deal.

Just dropped car off for:

Kenwood KDC-W5534U - CD/MP3/USB TUNER
Kenwood KFC-P703 - 6.5 inch components

Plus they're charging £60 to fit it all.

"Bought" (read as - acquired ;) ) a 512mb USB thingy & loaded up some tunes on it.

Should do the trick, they said go back at 2.30pm and it'll all be done.

Excited but I hate leaving my car with people I dont know :(
