Ice :(

ABS would have put you on your arse as well, I know how bad ice can be, managed to get half way around a roundabout that cars couldn't stop for and both wheels slid out from under me, ended up pushing it along the ground to the kerb to get it stood up.

ABS won't save you unless it's wet, and even then it's not that great

Umm dont think ABS would have helped in this case :/ My blackbird has linked brakes. Really was a case of lightly touching brakes and bike dissapearing from under me in a split second - didnt get a skid feel (well, maybe in my pants!!)

Try and not let it destroy your riders confidence. I had my 1st off the other month, it was really wet and I was going around this roundabout (only doing 15mph) and felt the back end go wide, so I let off the throttle to get it back in place and carried on, and it just went!

There must have been diesel on the road, because my dad went around the same roundabout about 2 hours before I did in his car and he was side ways at the same spot my bike went. He said he would have told me if he knew I went that way to get some petrol.

Minor mark on the exhaust, bar end battered, and broke my front brake master cylinder and that was it. It's done more damage in my head though because I'm very cautious now in the wet. Well, I'm cautious anyway in the wet but I'm sure you know what I mean. I don't know if its because its my first off or what.

Keep your chin up and forget about it!

As said ABS wont help you on ice with one wheel :p

Not much you could have done really, ice is our nemesis! even if you used the rear you still might have gone down.
Just glad you or the bike isn't badly damaged, also keep an eye on your wrist, if its still hurting in a week get it checked out! Too many people bust/crack small bones without realising.

it was bad last night too around 11 o clock, very icy,

did you use the back brake?

No, touched the front. TBH I dont use the back!

Good news on the bike front, shop have given it a good look over and only cosmetic damage. They have removed the bar end and throttle is fine now, just a bent brake leaver and the one damaged side panel.

I'm starting to ache though :( Neck and wrist aches, bruise on hip and leg. Nothing a couple of ales wont sort out im sure.

Got a couple of numbers to quote to repair the cosmetic damage, prob wait until end of winter to sort it though.

Agreed that ABS won't help you if you're turning, but should work fine in a straight line. I've certainly braked in a straight line, on ice, and come to a stop (eventually...) with relatively little drama. I've also been in the position of braking the front brake on a slippery surface and have the (non ABS) bike just go down beneath me, so know that can hurt :(

Hey ho.

Good to hear damage is only cosmetic. Beer is the best medicine.

What? ABS stops your wheel locking. If you're on ice then it doesn't matter if your wheel is locked or not; it will slide either way.

Have to agree with Arctine, all it does it stop your wheel locking, you must have either amazingly kept the bike perfectly straight or it wasn't proper Ice :p
Even if you are doing 2mph and turning or leaning the bike the front wheel will slide on ice

Ice is serious business when it comes to bikes :(

I was thinking of buying a shed of a bike to get me through the winter, but then I thought "you have a minimum chance of 90% of coming off when ice arrives" not worth putting your self at risk tbh.

I had a thought of getting a car over the winter, but I don't have a great job or anything, so I couldn't really afford it :/

you need one of those two wheels at the front scooter thingies

I think I must be quite lucky where I am, most of the roads I used last year were gritted and remained wet as opposed to icy throughout winter.
