Iceland trip - tips needed from people who have been

Iceland in the winter is amazing the golden hour last pretty much all day!

Ignore the northern lights trips if your staying outside Reykjavik just keep an eye on the forecast website and if necessary go where it looks good! Our two best displays were right outside a guest house and when we parked up in vik for a bite to eat!

Thanks for the replies all, Blue Car Rental look ideal so I'll go for them.

Our trip at the moment is :

A day in Reykjavik
Drive to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula for a day
Drive towards Jokulsarlon Lagoon, stopping at Skogarfoss waterfall & DC-3 plane wreck
Stay in a hotel close to Jokulsarlon Lagoon and using as a base for things in that area
Drive back to Reykjavik.

I'd probably say stay in Vik and do Jokulsarlon as a day trip Vik is a better base for the main bit of the South coast in my opinion! We went with blue Car and they were brilliant!

Thought I'd throw in a couple of pictures as no Thread on Iceland is complete without them!

My tips are here on flickr, the Iceland group discussion is a great source for info too.

This link is awesome. Thanks!

Planning a trip myself for the partner as a belated 30th birthday present for early next year (thinking February). I was looking at booking a self-drive package, but I think booking the apartment, flights and car rental separately and doing things ourselves will be more enjoyable and less tourist-y.

Iceland has loads of amazing guesthouses on farms often in the middle of nowhere so great for the Northern Lights!

Thanks again for the tips, Vik is on the list to visit but we've already booked a B&B so won't be staying Vik..

Can't wait to go now after seeing these photos again

I would love to go back on a dedicated Photo trip, we were ridiculously lucky with the weather though we were there 7 days and only had one day with a bit or drizzle and grey skies we could have seen the aurora pretty much every night if we had wanted to travel around specifically but after the show we had on our second night (picture above) we were happy to wait for them to come to us.

we went snow mobiling on a Volcanic Glacier, Ice Caving, Lava Caving, Snorkelling at Silfra, Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle amongst other things and stayed at three different locations, any questions just ask..

Did you go on a guided tour on the Ice Caves? it's something I'd like to do, I read that the only do this November-March as it's then not safe. Any recommendations?
