I've just been trying a few things to confirm what's happening. I've had FRAPS running in the top right hand corner and it stays stuck at 60fps solid, then the game stutters and the fps drops to 35 showing the card is throttling back hard.

Soon as I drop to windows both GPU-Z and CCC are showing the card running well over 100c. Even when I set fan manually to 100% makes no difference.

That's just a couple of minutes gaming.

Just felt the exhaust air and it's not even warm this time... I think the fan is faulty and causing the problems. It was hot when I tried it yesterday.

Don't you just love intermittent faults?

Funny that CCC and GPU-Z are both reading the fan is running full whack?

I've finally found the problem!

When in game the fan stops completely. When I drop to windows the fan spins up, this is exactly the problem I was having when trying to install windows and the card kept shutting down.

If you look at the screenshot above where it says fan speed and 1599rpm, the red bar dissappears while I've been in game.

When at the desktop I can control the fan perfectly and it all works but once in a game the fan stops working. What is that down to?? Can't be drivers as the card was doing this in the BIOS, brand new build and a blank HDD.

what power supply are you using? have you got the power connetor attached to the card? Im guessing not enough power? Seems odd I know but not enough power does funny things to graphics cards :X

Currently an Antec 500w Earthwatts, a very high quality PSU that can actually push over 550w @ 85%+ efficiency. Also when I was having problems installing windows I used an Enermax 600w Noisetaker to rule out PSU being faulty and same thing. That's 2 PSU's that are easily capable of powering this card.

Got an RMA number for it now and it's going back for a 2nd time... just hope they don't return it again.

make sure you get a refund on postage for your first RMA, if thats the case it clearly wasnt tested properly.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers?

what drive is your OS located on?

I always install windows on C:/ just asking for trouble somewhere down the line doing anything else imho. I've not tried the drivers no but I've been having fan problems since day 1, even in the BIOS.

Atm I'm not bothered about P&P I just don't want this card anymore tbh!

Just been trying things after the factory reset and the fan stayed on during 10 mins of gameplay... then the jerking started and again 110c when I came out. This time the fan stayed off in windows until I enabled ATI overdrive.

It's going back.

I had something like that with a system I was helping with. On a 1950XT the VRMs were in the 90Cs no matter the fanspeed. The rest of the card was cool. In the end it was the PSU, I figured it was supplying a rubbish current (insert correct phrase/word) as it was a dirty cheapo one. Took ages to figure out :(
