Anyone notice that on iChat you can now create 'Chat Rooms' or has this always been there?

I have just created a room called 'OcUK' .....

Open iChat, log in with your me.com address and go to;
File > Go To Chat Room > Enter OcUK and Come in n lets chat.

:D :D :D

EDIT: (For Info)
You can join AIM based Chat rooms with a AIM Based Name (@me.com, @mac.com or AIM)

It worked for me earlier when I joined just to test if it connected.

I'm out tonight so I can't stay and chat :)

It's the XMPP (jabber) protocol that provides multi-user chat I think. Which has been in iChat since 2004, though not fully supported. So between then and now they've started fully supporting it.

Personally, I hate iChat. I hate most instant messaging clients. But anything specific to AOL I absolutely loathe.

Edit:

In October 2005, iChat received support for encrypted communications, but only for paid subscribers to Apple's MobileMe (then known as .Mac) service. These features are part of iChat 3.1, released as part of the Mac OS X v10.4.3 update. This version also added support for XMPP multi-user chat.

How do you use iChat? I've never used it before...

Do you need to have had a MobileMe account? It seems like the only options are AIM (Never used it) and MobileMe/Mac.com which I've never had before.

I use my Gmail account

Gmail should work. Aren't Gmail and Google Talk addresses the same? I don't use google services (bar search) so don't know. I know Google Talk uses the XMPP protocol though, so should be compatible.

I see now. Thanks. Weird that they will use AIM for multi-user chat, when the only people who will be able to join is other AIM users. If they used XMPP for multi-user chat they would be able to allow a far broader range of people connecting using clients that support XMPP. So people using iChat, Google Talk, MSN, Yahoo and whatever else.

That's exactly my thought on it too. I would have thought that until reading that link from support.
