Probably a bit of a long shot, but here we go. Has anyone had experience of the self drive tours offered by Ichioku? I’m off to Japan soon and this caught my eye. Self driving an R34 GT-R V Spec to Daikoku parking area is one of those things I wanted to do 25 years ago when playing Gran Turismo Special Stage Route 5. Keen to hear if it’s totally worth it or a bit lame.

Can't comment on the tour, but I cannot stress enough that you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if you want to drive in Japan with a UK licence.
I had to have mine officially translated in Japan because mine's one of 6 countries not on the list  (Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan)

Good shout, already got it, a “1949” I believe is the right one.

I think it would be fine if you could really get yourself into the spirit of it.

Personally, I'd just be conscious that I'm rolling up in the daily tourist procession of people playing follow the leader in a slightly tragic Fast and the Furious lookie-likey car :p

Yeah that’s definitely a consideration. It’s hard to ignore I’ll just be some tragic old mid-life crisis in a rental car hanging out with a load of Japanese Barry boys :D

Well if you put it like that... sign me up :D

Jokes aside I'd 100% be going your second option if that works out OK.

The R34 was booked up for the dates I wanted and the kids were pushing for an R35 anyway. The plan is to pick it up at 19:00, take it back to the hotel, get an early night, get up early the next morning and take it on a route taking in:
  • Anest Iwata Turnpike to Mt. Taikan Observation Point
  • Ashinoko / Hakone Sky Line
  • Head to Fuji Speedway to the Motorsports Museum (arrive for opening at 10:00 and stay until midday, might stay longer if we change the plan afterwards)
  • Onto Fujiyoshida and then onto the Fuji Subaru Line via the Melody point (musical road).
  • Go up to the 5th station on the Subaru Line.
  • Head back to Fujiyoshida and stop for a nosey if there is time,
  • Leave to arrive Used Tire Mart in Sagamihara to see all the old vending machines by 16:00. Car has to be back by 19:00.

62,950 JPY, so around £320 for 24h including the collision damage waiver and toll pass. It's about another £250 per 24h thereafter. The more popular models get booked up quickly, but they have loads of cool options that are still available.

I need to take a look at this :D. Cheers

I did find this though:

£300ish for 24h seems fair, and there’s no follow the leader nonsense.

Been planning a holiday to Japan, did not know about this so thank you, would probably get an R33 GTR but maybe some other recommendations for maybe something dedicated JDM we've not seen in UK?

I was very tempted by this...

...but the kids would never have forgiven me.
