Iconic designer dies.

I used to have a purple chopper, whilst one of my mates had a red one and the other green, IIRC.

They were a class bike in their day.

I wasn't old enough for a Chopper though my brother had one. I had a Budgie instead.

I think the allure was partly down to how dangerous they were, you were literally minutes from serious injury on a Chopper, if not death!

Nah, it was because they were very nearly motorbikes! A small adjustment and they actually were.

Still have the scar on my left elbow from the wipeout I had at the Shepton Mallet Showground in 1976 :D, my grandparents were attending the Caravan club raleigh there and my parents had foisted me off on them for a week of the school holidays.

The Chopper was immense, insane and totally fun ;) and with the small addition of a playing card pegged to run against the spokes of the back wheel was even meaner :D :D

Thankyou Alan Oakley for the great childhood you memories, R.I.P.

There was a tv program on at the time called C.H.I.P.S. Me on my Chopper and my mates on their Grifters patrolling the back lanes of Sunderland. Happy days.
