Sorry if you've already read this on the MB forum, but only just realised this is a better place to ask for help...

Hello, I'm hoping some one can help me as I've spent hours trying to get the following set up to work.

I have an Asus p5k Premium motherboard which has been working fine with 3 sata drives and sata set to IDE in the the bios.

I have now bought 2 Icy Box IB-390 docking stations and seagate 1tb drives to allow me to add extra storage and allow me remove my photos from the PC when required, however I've found I can't get the IB-390s to work.

The drives in the Icy Box docking stations don't show up in Vista 64 bit nor bios.

Motherboard bios is the latest version I can find, ie. 11.01.

I've tried changing sata setting to AHCI and rebuilding, the icy box drive is still not seen in bios nor Vista 64 bit.

I've also tried plugging the docking stations in to different sata ports on the motherboard, currently using sata1 and 2 for the master hard drive and primary data drinve and 3 and 4 for the icy box docking stations.

If I plug the Icy Box caddies in using USB or E-Sata then they are picked up by vista and I'm able to use them.

However, the aim of buying these was to use the docking station so I would really like to get them working if any one knows how please.

I'm assuming the hardware isn't faulty as I have the same problem on both units and am using drives which I've used ok connected directly to sata ports.

Thank you.

Has anyone any ideas please?

Is anyone using the IcyBox 390 docking stations with an Asus p5k Premium motherboard, in which case what settings have you made or did it work straight out the box?

I don't think the parts are faulty has have tried 2 docking stations with different hard drives in and neither are detected.

Thank you.

When they are in the docking station, make sure the power switch on the back is set to the "OFF" position (as they will be getting power from the SATA connector, and not the AC adapter).

Thanks Fobose, have tried with power switch in both on and off positions, still doesn't detect the drive.

Have also tried an XP rebuild, drive not found so don't think a Vista problem.

Hi ander02,

I've got good news and bad news I'm afraid. You're not alone, but I haven't managed to get this working either.

After a LOT of googling, I've seen a few people with similar problems - most, if not all, have ASUS mobo's. Personally I'm running an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe and I've also bought the Icybox IB-390StUSD-B. I have a WD 1TB Green HDD fitted.

Like you, this works fine with a USB connection.
It also works fine connected to the external eSATA connectors (or at least it does now I've updated the JMicron drivers!)
I connected it to its own Molex straight off the PSU to eliminate power as a possibility.
Further to that I also plugged a SATA power connecteor direct to the Caddy with the side of my case off, and ran the eSATA cable to the rear. Again, worked fine, so power isnt the issue (and relating back to Fobose's post, that is with the power switch off as this toggles between the SATA and external power inputs, quite right!)
The only thing I haven't been able to eliminate is the SATA cable itself, it being hard wired to the caddy.

Crucially though, whilst docked the unit isn't even picked up by BIOS. The HDD is not recognised as attached. As such I believe this is a hardware/BIOS issue and probably specific to ASUS - which brings me back to the beginning!

If you do get it working PLEASE give us an update! For now I've given up on the dock and am using the Caddy externally. It still does the job I bought it for, albeit a less tidy solution than planned......

I have also posted on the ASUS forums, so we'll see what comes back, although I wont hold my breath.

that is weird

so the 'fix' for now would be, buy an internal SATA pci/pcie card and connect that up to the dock

Bledd,

Yeah, that was way too obvious - I hadn't thought of that!

Mind you, don't know if I can be bothered without being absolutely sure it'd work!
.....and with my Crossfire in place and an XFi fatality I'm a little short on slots!
Still a bit of a pain in the bum all round though eh?

Be nice if it just worked. If only life was as simple as me ;0)

Cheers for the reply.

it's not really a 'fix' though, just a bad workaround, Asus really need to sort this if it is indeed their problem

Pappa-D,
Thanks for your update, it's good to know I'm not alone in spending hours trying to get what should be a very good solution working with no luck.
I've tried emailing IcyBox but no reply as yet (not holding my breath!)
Like yourself I've taken the view that the caddy does the job even if not using the docking station, just means more wires and plugs, which is what I was hoping to avoid.
Will let you know if I get it working.
