I'm after a NAS enclosure, and require a firewall, ftp, samba, webserver and individual access rights.....the usual stuff!

Has anyone got anything to say about the Icy Box IB-NAS-2000-B in this regard?

Thanks,

Michael

Neil,

Thanks for the link to the review. Yes, your right, it doesn't have a webserver. However, it does have FTP. (Have you edited your original post?)

Networking printing is a good point! Didn't think about this!

I may be put off for another reason, it doesn't have any access monitoring functions.

Any recommendations for an alternative?

Many thanks,

Michael

Yes, I did edit my post... Just to confuse you obviously :)

Not sure of alternatives... Depends on what you're after....

Monitoring doesn't really interest me. Would be nice if the device had USB printer ports. But as it is, it basically seems good!

I was/am considering raid!?

With my photos for example, I currently back them up from one of my machines to another one.

With a raid NAS system I could obviously just throw them all onto the one box and theoretically be safe in the knowledge that its in effect already backed up.

HOWEVER, in reality is it really safe? Is RAID uber reliable?

If not, then why bother with a NAS system, and just manually backup to a different machine/location periodically therefore saving a lot of money!

eg: D-Link 323 http://www.trustedreviews.com/networking/review/2006/11/20/D-Link-DNS-323/p1

personally, having looked around i dont think you can beat the synology products, OCUK stock them, and they seem pretty hot

Surely depends what you're after... eg: If you want raid for example... Or if you want something simple and not interested in external FTP access etc...

On a rethink, these are the features I'm after:

samba
ftp
webserver
individual access rights
network printing (USB)
firewall
access monitoring

gigabit ethernet would be good too!

Michael
