Looking for an IDE Icy-Box. Are they limited to how big a hard driv i can fit in one? Thing is, i have an 80g which i would like to use for now but may want to get a bigger capacity one later on. What is the Max they can take? (IDE ones)

Get this one mate..It supports sata and IDE harddrives...and it has USB2 and sata host Interface..http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-004-BT&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72

Am using one myself with a 500gb WD sata drive fitted and connected to my PC by SATA...

How do these external hdds with sata ports work?
They connect either to an eSATA port which some newer mobos have next to all the USB ports or for older boards they often come with a PCI backplate which connects to an internal SATA port to provide an external port. Power comes from the usual transformer brick.

I am looking for one that can use either an IDE hard drive or a SATA hard drive as i have an 80g IDE but want to get a SATA one in the future.

chaparral The one you have, it supports both types? Has a SATA connection on the enclosure? Does it come with a PCI SATA Card? Is it mains powered? Thanks

It supports both types you plug the ide cable in or the S-ATA when you install the hard drive.
No they dont come with PCI adaptor.
They are mains powered, come with inline transformer.

ok cool, so I take it they are a lot quicker than firewire then

Yeah, it's basically an internal drive but in a box outside the PC, the speed is the same as internal SATA.

They be the same speed as your int sata drives..as the sata socket that comes with it on a PCI plate is connected straight to one my motherboard sata ports..

A single harddrive can't even reach sata one speeds..so there no real need for sata two speeds...

that was not the question.
I asked if these could take sata II drives. In other words could i house a sata 2 drive in it?

Sorry to hijack the thread, is there any sata enclosures or ways in which you can connect the sata drive using internal power from the power supply. ie the PCI backplate has a data connection aswell as a sata power connection?

I haven't seen any enclosures which are powered that way but I have seen backplates with a SATA port and a Molex socket which, with the supplied cables, allow you to run a bare drive externally for testing and the like.

I wish i could do this as well...I have way to many ext power bricks and plugs how it is.. :(

I use my pendrive for taking bits and bobs to mates houses etc. Akll i want the Hard drive for is to backup pics / videos.

Would i be better off just putting a new Hard drive in my PC and using that rather than getting an separate enclosure? The new hard drive would be ok / secure?
