Hey just a quicky can i use my icy box to connect a dvd/rw or cd/rw drive and write/read cd's and dvd's, making an internal drive external
Cheers.

Hi there, Welcome to the forums :)

Do you mean place an internal full-size optical drive into an external enclosure?

If so, then if its a 5.25in Icy Box (for mounting a single 5.25 drive), then yes.

If its 3.5in or smaller, then no.

Yeah an internal device connected and powered by the icy box, was just thinking i may get a better internal device and use my icy box for both HDD and dvdr rather than buying an external dvd writer. As i use a laptop i could do with one multi device icy box does that make sense.?
Cheers.

Sorry, i'm not quite sure what you mean. You mention you want to use both the HDD and DVDr in the icybox. May I ask what model icybox you have?

I've got a 3.5 akasa at the mo but thought there may be something out there so i could have an external writer then change the drive making it external HD storage space. I.e. one box with changeable drives.
Soz im not to techie.

Ah, I understand you.

It is possible - but not elegant. DVD drives are much bigger than standard hard drives - so you would need to a buy a 5.25in type external SATA enclosure and a 5.25in to 3.5in mounting adapter to attach the HDD into the much larger enclosure. However, due to the placing of the fixed SATA ports in the enclosures, this may require some SATA data and power extension cables to correctly connect up the hard disk, which may be fiddly to connect.

Such a system would require you to disassemble the enclosure every time you want to swap between the two drives. Instead I would suggest you just buy two separate SATA enclosures: one 5.25in, one 3.5in.
