IcyBox 390

I bought one the other week. It was very stiff to put the caddie inside the docking station at first, but after its been in and out a few times it goes in with ease (no jokes :P). They are hotswappable as long as your motherboard supports it.

I bought 2 of these, and got a docking station in my pc, For me the external slides in and our easy without any force needed. I have a 1tb drive in mine and the only prob is the mirror front scratches really easy, so might be a good idea leaving the protected film on the front, anyway heres 3 pics

And heres a review........ http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...tagan-ib-390-hard-drive-enclosure-review.html

Nice pics. I tried taking some of the Antec Solo which its housed in (no room in my P182), but the pics came out looking really bad! The internal dock is a bit naff looking without the caddie inside it as it has a dull black front. The caddie itself seems very well made and looks smart.

Oh yeah the sata lead is fixed to the docking satation, and its not very long at at all. It only just reaches to my sata sockets, but I do have the lead going behind the tray for less clutter.

I read a review saying the lead wasn't very long, but I have discreatly hidden it in my antec solo with quite a bit of slack so I thought perhaps newer stock were shipping with a longer cable?

Ok, this looks like a fantastic product however, i know nothing of this eSATA malarky. What i want is to have the docking station in my PC connected via SATA and i'll use it as a portable USB drive elsewhere, does my motherboard need this newfangled eSATA or does it just need a SATA socket?

You just need to use SATA when using the internal dock. You'll notice on the caddie itself it has USB, e-SATA and SATA power connections. The eSATA on the back of the caddie slips in to the docks ESATA -> SATA connector basically.

You also need to have the On/Off switch set to "off" when using the dock, as the caddie gets its power from the sata power connector rather than the "DC IN" once in the dock.

Well if you havent got a esata socket at the back of your pc, you can buy a esata pci backplate, that just connect to a sata socket on you mother board. Remember it has the usb connection too.

I seem to have worded that badly, basically i want to use the sata cable from the caddy and connect it to my motherboard. This eSATA stuff isn't an issue is it? It'll work just fine as long as it's plugged into the caddy which is in turn plugged into my motherboard?

When i'm using it as a portable drive i'll just stick to USB, it's just connecting it to an internal SATA connector using the caddy that has me confused as i haven't dealt with this eSATA thing it has in the specs before.

It works fine for me! Once its in the internal dock its just like having an internal hard drive. If your motherboard supports AHCI you will be able to "safely remove" the drive and pull it out of your PC whilst your PC is still on.

Basically you have a power conn and sata conn on the docking station and you just connect it up like you would do any sata hdd or dvd drive. Then just put your hdd in the icybox and just slide it it the docking station, without turning on the icybox. Once its in the docking station your pc treats the hdd installed in the icybox as a internal hdd.

Basically you use esata and usb when you want to use it as a normal extenal hdd enclosure.

Thanks for all the replies guys, i've never really looked into eSATA so didn't have a clue what it is and just wanted to be sure my old motherboard would still work fine.
