IcyBox Problem

Hi, I bought an IcyBox enclosure for a couple of old hard drives I had lying around about 8 months ago. It worked perfectly until recently as now everytime I plug it in, it gives me "USB device not recognised" errors and says "one of the USB devices attached has malfunctioned".

I've checked the drive and it works perfectly if I plug it into the motherboard and PSU. The drive has been formatted and tried again with no luck.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks

P.S Where's the search function gone?

As you have taken the hard disk out and its tested working fine that pretty much points to a faulty caddy.

I imagine that the circuit board for the USB-controller has burnt out, the same thing happened to my IcyBox (also my mates), return it under RMA if you can?

The search function has been disabled for some reason.

Have had the exact same problem with my boss' Maxtor external HDD.

After testing that the actual HDD inside was working fine, I simply bought a new Akasa external case and popped it into there. Works like new.

I would assume that, even if the HDD is made to the usual high standards, the cases are not... hence why cases tend to fail.

Ok, so can anyone recommend a case which is less likely to fail or is it just a matter of luck? I bought the IcyBox as i wanted to use my old IDE drives with it, but also knew that i would probably be using a SATA drive with it somewhere in the near future. I'm a bit reluctant to buy another but don't know of any other that will let me use both types of drives.

My icybox randomly disconnects from windows when doing large transfers. It's connected via firewire. Looks nice but wouldn't buy again. :(
