I read a story some time ago about a man who travelled through an alien "portal" at the gravitational centre of the galaxy or some such, and visited alien worlds, while another race of aliens arrived at our solar system and made contact, and kind of "dug-in" for the future, preparing against the coming of another alien race: the "crackers", who blew up suns or something.

There was a woman who worked with the travelling guy to begin with, and she found ways to extend her life so that she could lay a defense against the crackers, in the form of a time-disoriented plant on the surface of the moon...

Many years in the future when the man returns to earth people live in a massive orbital tree.

So... anyone have any clues at all what the hell I'm remembering? :)

Stephen Baxter - Time, Space & Origin - same people different story in each book.

Warning these books can blow your mind !

Reading this thread makes me feel like I've been smoking crack (or at least this is how I think my brain would feel if I smoked crack)

I'm getting a vague recollection, is the title something to do with a gun or pistol or something? Dammit my memory is even hazier than yours!

Oh wait, maybe that was an acid thing?

As there seem to be some Sci-fi readers in this thread I'd like to see if anyone knows a book that's been driving me potty trying to find:

A giant or tiny insect like creature from another dimension sets up a massive artificial solar system.
Catching light waves from a supernova (sol) which are actually the conciousness' of dead beings she populates them with the lizard people who evolved a civilisation on Earth after man became extinct and recreates bodies for their minds.
Later they start using humans when the lizards decide they were happier being bodiless minds.
People from all human history start waking up on planets and having to deal with a second life and it followed a few different people.

I think the whole idea was to develop a weapon to stop some other creature from destroying the ant things home dimension.

So any ideas?
