ID shows their new engine

remember back to when Doom3 tech was demo'd on stage, on the MAC. Jobs introduced Carmack to talk about it.

There was no game there, just models, textures being lit up and shifted about. Technology aside, pretty meaningless and on that basis I wouldn't speculate on IDs next game from what's been shown here. It's just a glimpse of Carmacks engine, nothing else.

The doom presentation however did show what the engine could do, light and real time shadowing etc, the game ended up looking pretty close in some respects to the demo they showed.

Oh god, Apple Macs suck. And lol @ those ridiculous graphs of Safari and stats about Vista.

Well they are the crowd that are impressed and calling it the second coming when Steve Jobs makes virtually any statement.

(Jobs) imacs are now going to cost 3x as much as they do now

(crowd) woo steve steve steve steve steve steve

in my opinion macs are for lazy people (the arts/entertainment) who want to be able to do something straight away without having to figure out how it works :) lazy bums!

Thats the sorta mentality i get of apple people though, the hardcore ones at least. At those keynotes at macworld when jobs makes an announcement no matter how minor it is (ie: this lcd is 1/10 of an inch thinner) the crowd go mad like its something major, its almost like theyre starved for good stuff so practically anything is on par with the second coming of jesus.

Got to love how 'PC' people feel the need to bash Apple even when the thread really has nothing to do with Apple at all.

Probably because apple do no end of "pc" bashing,.

ID are simply the best at making any kind of engine, period.

Everything they make looks freakin' awesome and runs with high detail on pretty much any old card.

And I don't think we'd ever see Mr Gates stoop as low as to bash the opposition with an ad campaign on most bus stops.

I wouldn't say that, doom 3 for example was an ok engine but it seemed to get very few people buying the license to use it for a game, quake 4 doom 3, quakewars and theres one other game i know of that uses it, can't remember the name it uses.

imo doom 3 and the engine really seemed more hype than substance.

I really think carmack tailored the engine far too much for indoor corridor crawler gameplay. Every game thus far that uses the engine has been very doom 3 in style with the small areas. Only exception is obviously quakewars and even then the engine had to get quite an overhaul to make it suitable to larger environments.
