ID shows their new engine

Video of the keynote speech is available at apple.com showing the game running... looks a bit jerky, but Carmac said the demo was created in only 10 days, so can probably forgive that :)

I can't get it to play :(

Yeah, got quick time, but it opens it as a live broadcast and then just loads and if I click off of it, it stops loading and when I don't, it stops anyway after a short while.

Apple uses quicktime, it's incredibly buggy, you want to use media player classic, it will stream the video fine, and doesn't take up nearly 100% cpu to play a video either. :)

Edit - Nice to see that Jobbs purposley missed out Opera when comparing internet browsers as we all know it performs better than firefox and I'm guessing by the comparison, better than Safari too.

The people who go to these things scare me. I couldn't read on after the line in the article "Lights are going down. People are shouting "Steve!""

I needed to vomit at that point whilst questioning the sexuality of anyone who would do that.

ID are simply the best at making any kind of engine, period.

Everything they make looks freakin' awesome and runs with high detail on pretty much any old card.

And I don't think we'd ever see Mr Gates stoop as low as to bash the opposition with an ad campaign on most bus stops.

Mr Gates is also not the proprietry owner of the "pc". When Apple bashes PC they're not targgeting Bill Gates. There are other operating systems also available.

The reason Bill Gates doesnt retaliate with "APPLE SUX LOL!" is because the Mac is a product, whereas the PC is a format/genre. Somebody owns the Mac, nobody owns the PC. This of course would lead to very expensive law suits. It doesnt neccesarily make Bill gates any "better" than Steve Jobs.

So who are Apple targeting with their adverts? Because they must be competing with someone. I think if you asked Steve Jobs who his competitor is he would say Microsoft.

I agree, Bill Gates doesn't own the PC genre, but he certainly stands to lose the most if Apple were to take over the market. :)

Oh, and ID > Epic > Crytek tbh. If Farcry was any kind of indication, I don't think Crytek will be any good.

I wouldn't say that, doom 3 for example was an ok engine but it seemed to get very few people buying the license to use it for a game, quake 4 doom 3, quakewars and theres one other game i know of that uses it, can't remember the name it uses.

imo doom 3 and the engine really seemed more hype than substance.

Quake 4, PREY, Quake Wars, Call of Juarez and obviously Doom 3 and its expansion.

Conversely, how many games are made on the Source engine? Excluding MODs, there's Heroes of Might and Magic, Postal 3 (not out yet), Left 4 Dead, SiN episodes (although I s'pose using plural on the word episodes is a bit mis-leading ;)) and Vampire: The Masquerade. Still not a great deal!

How about the Oblivion engine? Oblivion and Gothik 3.

Battlefield 2 engine? Just Battlefield 2 and 2142.

It seems to me that the majority of the games get more of a following if they make their own proprietry engine. It's not so much to do with the Doom 3 engine being bad, but more developers wanting an engine tailored to their needs.

Epic Games or Crytek tbh.

There's a difference between a good engine and one that just looks pretty. As already said, ID do the best job by far for optimising their engines. Carmack is also big on his OpenGL, which is good because its Open-source.

Its funny how people bash OS X for being too easy to use. Thats the whole point, less time getting something stupid to work and more time actually doing work. At least its not that crap 'menu maze' that is Vista.

CryEngine1 was pretty well optimized imo, haven't played any Unreal3 games on the PC yet so can't comment on the optimization for that.

Probably because apple do no end of "pc" bashing,.

They're going for the cool image though...

.... but everyone knows people who bully/pick on others are just trying to aggressively emphasize their coolness because they actually have a big inferiority complex usually accompanied with low self asteem.

:p ;)
