ide cable from optical to hdd

hi there. just built my first pc. fired up windows, but when i try to install games its really slow. I mean pedestrian slow. So is it because I have an older hard drive hooked up with a optical drive with an ide cable? Should I just purchase a sata drive? thanks

Run HDtune or HDtach or any of the other benchmark software suggested in the sticky. Then some more details on the hardware you are using would help.

how old are we talking here? What is the rest of spec?

If you can have your Hdd on one ide cable and the optical drive on another, should speed things up a bit, due to less bandwidth restrictions
