hi,
just built a new system i have an old ide cd drive the ribbon connector type im unable to connect the ribbon to the motherboard no suitable type connector.
just wondering if there is some conversion cable ii could by that would sort it?

buy new cd drive. Or **** it, dont replace it, do you often use your cd drive? I use it every 6 months at best.

It's not about conversion cable. IDE and SATA controllers are compatible one direction only, it means SATA controller do have IDE functionality, but IDE controller doesn't have SATA one.
So all you need to buy is an adaptor which includes SATA controller, but it is too much potential issues there, including speed impact. So the best way it to bin/sell old IDE drive (2-3 pounds ?) and buy new one, SATA-capable. It's about 12 quids only, so no big money involved. By the way, you've got a chance to have "combo" drive which writes DVD/CDs and reads BluRays. COst about 40-50 quids :)
