IDE hard drive into SATA machine as 2nd hard drive??

I would assume it's got an IDE slot, this is probably in use by the DVD drive

but an IDE port can support two devices at once

check that the system has an IDE slot first.

my work machine is a dell and has none

You'd either need a SATA to IDE converter/adaptor some times known as a SATA To IDE Dongle or a PCI IDE card.

OC don't seem to stock either.

I made changes at the setup stage, F2, switched on SATA2, tried both autodetect settings and anything else I could alter just to try to make it work.

When I let it run through there is no drive visible.

So this is with a SATA <> IDE adapter?

Are both the drive and adapter powered correctly? Is the drive spinning up when you power on the PC?

Yes.

Drive gets hot so I presume it is spinning, it was working OK when inserted. The adaptor light is on and is connected through the hard wires in the PC with a SATA cable to the motherboard.

I've never been convinced with IDE<>SATA adapters. If I was having this much hassle I'd be giving up and going with either a PCI card or a USB caddy.

It did install a driver at one point but turned out it was for the master HD. I think it would have to detect the new drive before it installed a driver. I have run it on an IDE machine at work so the thinking now is that the adaptor is duff so I will try another just to be sure.

Watch this space!:D
