A friend of mine has a number of old ide hdd's which he requires the data off but his old pc has stopped working. What is the best way to extract the data ? Would he need a hdd docking station ? He eventually wants to buy a nas with at least 4tb of storage. Has a mac now.

Some form of USB docking station, IDE to USB converter (this is what I have, inexpensive and does SATA too) or a portable 3.5" caddy would do the job.
May be hard to track these down for IDE now though

take a look it might be what you are looking for.:)

Not really helpful to get data off IDE disks, unfortunately...

The cheapest way might be to connect them to a friend's PC, using a cheap PCI SATA/IDE card if needed (and IDE cable from the old PC), and copy files onto a USB hard drive or similar. Cost would be a few quid for the PCI card, plus a beer for the friend :)
