A friend of mine has a number of old ide hdd's which he requires the data off but his old pc has stopped working. What is the best way to extract the data ? Would he need a hdd docking station ? He eventually wants to buy a nas with at least 4tb of storage. Has a mac now.

I don't know whether you have ever heard of/ tried ICY Dock but they would deal with exactly what you are looking for but they are 3TB of storage though so not the 4TB you are eventually looking for.

Not really helpful to get data off IDE disks, unfortunately...
The cheapest way might be to connect them to a friend's PC, using a cheap PCI SATA/IDE card if needed (and IDE cable from the old PC), and copy files onto a USB hard drive or similar. Cost would be a few quid for the PCI card, plus a beer for the friend
