IDE, SATA and RAID noob - help please

From my understanding, SATA drives and connections are superior to the old IDE drives and connections. I'm currently using a 160Gb IDE drive, but will be considering using a couple of SATA drives in the future. Can someone please explain the benefits of using a SATA drive over an IDE drive (or link to any articles explaining the differences and advantages). I assume that using one SATA drive would be quicker than using just one IDE drive?

Furthermore, I have the most basic understanding of RAID setups, but wouldn't like to be quoted on any of my knowledge. Again, could someone please explain the basics and/or point me to any articles on the benefits of using a RAID array?

For instance, when 2 SATA drives are used in a RAID array, my understanding is that they can either work independently as two drives or together so that one is basically a backup/copy of the other. So if one fails or has errors, the other can be used to continue working (and I assume boot from if there are serious issues)? Is this right??

Seriously confused with this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks.

You really are a man of few words aren't you?! But I have to say, you've been very helpful and informative so far.

Nice to see I haven't offended you too much with my post the other day. Guess I just needed to get used to your style of communicating.

Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated. :)

So u can only run RAID when u have 2 HDD or more?.

Yeah, RAID stands for Redundant Array of Individual (or Inexpensive depending on who you talk to) Disks. It's a means of combining multiple disks in arrangements to provide better speed, redundancy or both than can be achieved with a single drive.
