right oki, my hdd died. Sammy 160gb sata, clicks whirrs and takes 30mins to let the bios read it. RMA time.

In the mean time I have stuck my trust old 20gb hdd in, now, why is running at ata33? Thought IDE was like, 133 speed?

Anyway I can bump it up? The cables are that bundled with my mobo.

me = stumped. Also, just noticed, its also connected my dvd drive at ata 33. And is taking a year to install oblivion.

You have 33/66/100/133 speeds, most being 100 in modern drives as I only think a couple of manufacturers used 133.

Only a couple of drives come close to the limit of 100 so I would not worry about the 33, my 20gb Maxtor is 66 so it would not surprise me for an earlier / value drive to operate at the slower speed.

Oh ATA33 is quite possible for a HD - especially one as old as a 20GB unit.
As for your optical drive only connecting at ATA33 - this is again usually correct, I don't know of that many optical drives that do run faster, they just don't need the bandwidth.

The slowness you are experiencing is due to your current slow HD rather than the speed of your optical drive.
