Okay so my nice new SATA Hard Drive arrived and I have installed it and began using the Copy Drive function in Norton Ghost 10 to Copy a 40GB IDE drive, my (C) drive, to the SATA drive. The new drive has been installed as required checked the BIOs to check everything was okay, started up windows and began using the Copy Drive function.

Went through the set up wizard and everything seems to be going okay, but then it just stopped, no error code just unable to continue copying C drive.

When I try again it comes up with the error message cannot contiune with windows active and tells me to continue in recovery environment, which does not have copy drive.

The new drive is unformated but shows as primary in the copy drive wizard where as when I first tried it showed as nothing, and Nroton are far from helpful.

SO this is a bit long winded, any suggestion?

I've never used Norton Ghost, but it sounds like your trying to copy the system disk on the fly. Is it possible for you to take an image of the IDE drive, then load the image onto your new SATA drive?

If you want Acronis True Image, that's an easy program to use, I could send you it or somthing.

Hi if I understand you your suggesting I creat a backup to the new drive. would I then be able to boot from it? Also do I need to formate the drive before copying an image onto it?

Yeah, just make an exact image of your IDE drive, quick format the SATA drive, then load the image onto the SATA drive.

You will be able to boot from it, make sure you disconnect the IDE drive first ( if you want the SATA drive to keep the C drive letter )

Still prefer Ghost 9 to 10, the Clone feature was great and pretty quick too, always made sure i had bootable media to hand though (just in case)

hi well ill be doing very similar soon if you dl the trial version of Acronis True Image 10 will i be able to copy my ide drive to new sata?or do i need full version.

Im planning on same thing, IDE-SATA.

Gona use acondis or whatever its called as most ppl recommended it when asked. I had used ghost years ago but that was a fresh windows xp clone to cdr i did (think was xp, maybe win me). But what i want is hdd to hdd cloning on the fly or somit. Gona buy either segate or samsung on this week specials probably on monday. Will post if and when i attempt it etc. Btw any special things like settings to do or do you use safe mode or need a sata driver and which controller to use etc?
