At the moment im running IDE HDD and CD drive.

I keep running out of space on my current HDD and need to get a bigger one. I though I may as well switch to SATA seeing as there cheap enough these days but what sort of improvements should I notice ?

It's difficult to give a quantifiable figure for any improvement as that will depend very much on your usage. In general however a new HDD will have a significantly faster sustained transfer rate than your old one. This is, however, nothing to do with the move to SATA, it's simply that HDD technology keeps moving on and the rate that data can be read from the platters increases with each new generation of drives.

It might be interesting for you to run HDTune or HDTach against your current HDD then trawl through the benchmark thread, find one for whichever drive you're looking at buying and compare the numbers.
